For generations, the federal government enforced civil rights laws with an eye toward remedying historic, systemic discrimination against Black people and other people of color. The Justice Department pressed schools to desegregate. The Education Department worked to promote equal opportunity and held schools accountable for racial bias.

But under the Trump administration, efforts to address deep-rooted inequities for students of color are being cast as discriminatory against white students. Programs that have long withstood legal scrutiny are now quick to be deemed “ illegal DEI ” — diversity, equity and inclusion — by the White House. Schools that do not comply have faced threats to their funding, and in some cases, lost federal grants.

Civil rights attorneys describe the administration’s actions as a complete inversion of legal history.

A prediction market reported George Santos to federal prosecutors after he boasted he’d be going to Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, then bet against his own attendance, according to a person familiar with the investigation.

Kalshi, the online prediction marketplace, referred Santos to the Department of Justice after detecting suspicious trades made by the former congressman ahead of Trump’s Feb. 24 speech, the person said. The person spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

Kalshi also reported the trades to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, a federal regulatory body that has vowed to crack down on insider trading in prediction marketplaces.

Governor expresses worry as deluge of last-minute ballots and slow system could delay results in tightest races

California’s primary elections, including its fiercely fought gubernatorial contest, are at the mercy of a notoriously slow vote-counting system as polls closed on Tuesday, and it could be days or even weeks before the outcomes of the tightest races become clear.

Voting experts expect the state’s 58 county elections offices to be deluged with last-minute absentee ballots, as they have been in the last few election cycles, and spend weeks undertaking a painstaking ballot-by-ballot verification process.

That presents a procedural problem whenever races are close, as they tend to be in the state’s most competitive congressional districts, and the whole country is left waiting – as it was in 2020, 2022 and 2024 – to find out which party controls the House of Representatives.

The NYPD plans to hire 580 additional uniformed officers by the end of the year, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Monday, revealing an unexpected staffing increase, given Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s vow to keep police headcount flat.

Tisch said during a City Council budget hearing that the additional hires would bring the NYPD to 35,555 uniformed officers by the end of the year.

That would be a slightly larger police force than under Mayor Eric Adams, when the number of officers hovered around 35,000 at its peak, according to city budget documents and NYPD press releases.

The gist of it is that Strava just killed its free API, and will now require developers to have a subscription.

At Strava, we care deeply about developers, and the health of the developer ecosystem. There are now 241,000 Strava API developers, up from 185,000 last year. Starting today, all current and future applications will automatically receive access to the Standard developer tier. This allows you to serve up to 10 athletes and start building immediately, completely eliminating the previous queue.

This essentially kills thousands of tools people build using the free API.

If you're looking to move away from Strava, so far I've found four open source alternatives:

• CubeTrek - Open-source GPS track manager with 3D topography visualization for outdoor activities.
• Endurain - Self-hosted fitness tracking service for running, cycling, and more with full data control.
• RunnerUp - An open source run tracker for Android.
• Geo Activity Playground - Data analysis and visualization based on GPS tracked outdoor activities.
• OpenTracks - A privacy-focused sport tracking application for Android that records GPS tracks and supports Bluetooth sensors without any internet access or ads.

Sometimes I have a hard time deciding who I despise more, parasite Mark Zuckerberg or its witless hosts who keep using its products—yes, Zuck's pronoun is it. Ban Ray-Ban, for frick's sake.

We want a new door bell and we will even be able to run new wires (currently we only have 2 Wires). I would like to have video and 2 way audio locally hosted, though the most important thing is, that the base functionality (door bell button with connected wireless door chimes through the house) needs to be absolutely reliable (no random connectivity issues).

I have found the Acuvox R20A, which is seems to have all the bells and whistles about SIP (audio and video) calls. Though from its documentation it seems, that bell chimes also must use SIP, making it more depending on my network infrastructure and the self hosted SIP server (like Asterisk). I don't see a possibility to trigger a relay on button press for triggering traditional door chimes. Which is a shame, since that would be the most reliable for this basic functionality

Do you have good ideas on how to go with this? Or does it make sense, to break this up and use a more basic door bell, while also adding camera and audio additionally as separate devices?

EDIT: I now decided to buy the Reolink PoE Doorbell. It even has an official integration with Home Assistant. I will see, how good I can get the 2-way audio to run through HA or Frigate
