They're like sports fans because that's what states sponsor sports for. To promote cheering for your team, be it country, political party or local youth league team no matter what. Sports is practice for blind patriotism, fascism and imperialism.

It has not been long from when promoting that spirit was an openly stated goal of organised sports.

You're not wrong. Today every game begins with the national anthem, however the first usage of that was in the early 1900s. I think 1917, but I could be wrong.

It was at a baseball game. But not before the game. It was actually played during the 7th inning stretch.
