It should, as long as you don't try to abbreviate it as tar -h though... the short form is tar -? which illustrates the joke nicely

Since a competent typist could type that in at most 3 seconds, it's worth a shot.

what? 3 seconds for "tar --help"???, I could type that out faster in my phone? In a physical keyboard you could type thar in a fraction of a second?

you could type thar in a fraction of a second?

*boom*

lol that happens when I type in my phone, and my bad I was stupid enough to not read at most.

[–] night_petal@piefed.social 2 points 6 days ago

They also failed to read "at most".

Is

man tar

a Tar command or a Man command?

[–] BlackLaZoR@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

I'd use tar -help and we'd all die

[–] darklamer@feddit.org 3 points 6 days ago

Probably not, the double-dash long commandline option is a GNU extension and isn't guaranteed to work with every tar implementation.

[–] Barbarian@sh.itjust.works 17 points 6 days ago

I use the mnemonic "extract ze file" for tar -xzf

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

tar -xcvf file.tar.gz /dev/random
