Since a competent typist could type that in at most 3 seconds, it's worth a shot.

[–] imjustmsk@lemmy.ml 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

what? 3 seconds for "tar --help"???, I could type that out faster in my phone? In a physical keyboard you could type thar in a fraction of a second?

[–] Tiresia@slrpnk.net 15 points 6 days ago (2 children)

you could type thar in a fraction of a second?

*boom*

[–] imjustmsk@lemmy.ml 2 points 6 days ago

lol that happens when I type in my phone, and my bad I was stupid enough to not read at most.

[–] night_petal@piefed.social 1 points 6 days ago

They also failed to read "at most".

[–] JohnAnthony@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 6 days ago

It should, as long as you don't try to abbreviate it as tar -h though... the short form is tar -? which illustrates the joke nicely

[–] darklamer@feddit.org 3 points 6 days ago

Probably not, the double-dash long commandline option is a GNU extension and isn't guaranteed to work with every tar implementation.

[–] BlackLaZoR@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

I'd use tar -help and we'd all die

[–] Reygle@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

Is

man tar

a Tar command or a Man command?

[–] Barbarian@sh.itjust.works 10 points 6 days ago

I use the mnemonic "extract ze file" for tar -xzf

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

tar -xcvf file.tar.gz /dev/random

[–] SirHery@lemmy.world 11 points 6 days ago

Tear would be funnier. You tear the tar open.

[–] Grass@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago

since when did assign and create exist? back in the day all the pirates used daemontools to mount stuff... and everyone made new files in whatever program edits them...

[–] Smoogs@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

[–] zakobjoa@lemmy.world 13 points 6 days ago (1 children)

oh yeah you gotta mount that hard drive baby... fsck it real good until it gives you what you need... if you're not sure how to handle it ask the man for instructions...

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 11 points 6 days ago (1 children)

You don’t have to mansplain

[–] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 1 points 6 days ago

but... but... that's what the man is for... that's all the man knows how to do...
