I second this, wtf is it? A weird gray slab of meat? A flattened condom?
and when we are at it, what is the brown shit? the only stuff i recognize there is the carrot...
It looks like a super dry smashed beef patty? Maybe? I hope?
The patty is a TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein) patty with a hint of beef.
No idea what the other thing is, gravy toffee?
Wow, that doesn't sound any better at all, lol
They're not great but you can recognize that they're intended to be a hamburger.
Sadly, there are even lower quality patties that are entirely TVP. They come as a perfect grey disk that don't change color when cooked, the cross section looks like neoprene and it tastes about the same.

That quote is referring to the other picture in the article. The one that has a tortilla and shredded meat with it.
