I've always wondered what happens in these situations? I got close one time when I went to buy some stuff at Walmart and my card was dexlined(turns out my card was stolen, spent all my money on tik tok, called bank and charges were reversed in 2 days). I had to leave without getting the food I was trying to buy so it was a little difficult figuring out meals for those 2 days but I survived.
But at a restaurant, I can't give the meal back. I wouldn't assume they just write off the cost. If it was out of my control(like my example above) police should not really need to be involved. I doubt the old story of being forced to wash dishes for the night to pay for the meal is true.
So what actually happens?
If you can explain that you have the money to pay, you just can't get to it at the moment, you can leave something valuable or your ID card at the restaurant and return with the money later.
If you can't pay even later, it's petty theft and they may get police involved.
My luck I would leave my ID and then get pulled over on way home...
"license, insurance and registration..."
"look officer, you probably won't believe this..."
They can't force you to work it off, they have no authority to enforce such a thing. If you walk out without paying, they can call the police and file a report. You still owe them, so they can sue you over it. Realistically, when faced with the court fees and logistics, any sensible restaurant would drop a one-off offence, even if you stood your ground and refused to pay, because the amount of money is simply not worth it.
I've known people who got caught dine and dashing at the local Denny's and they were offered a chance to either pay the bill or work it off so I'm not as doubtful of the old cliche.
Interesting, I thought it was only like local restaurants in a small town... If ever
