the gender gap in Stem and trades is easily explainable: women have a significantly lower interest in those fields
my trade is one of the top 5 most dangerous careers. 2 of my friends have died in the job. it has 98% men, 2%women. I've never heard a feminist advocate for more female representation in this trade. can anyone explain that?
the 2 females I've met in the trade were exceptional. they both worked their way into managerial positions. this demonstrates the meritocracal ideology in the trades.
women rarely make it through an apprenticeship. an apprenticeship involves a tremendous amount of physical strength, which women are less likely to possess.
my question is why are feminists not advocating for representation in military, labor, and skilled labor sectors?
Girls have a lower interest in those fields because they're socialised differently than boys. They grow up with different priorities. Feminists have definitely argued for less gender conditioning in childhood, and that would result in more women doing your job. So I think feminists are arguing for more people to do your job, just indirectly.
Let Me ask you something: why did you get into this line of work? What made you want to get an apprenticeship, and keep coming back even though it was hard and dangerous?
While different socialisation explains some of these gaps, it doesn't seem to explain all of them. For example, in overall more equal societies, the gap in some industries increases, suggesting that some of the effect is quite a free choice.
i got into the trade because it was the most lucrative career option available to me, and I enjoyed it.
i continued and completed my apprenticeship because the physical danger appealed to me. it made my heart skip a beat and my adrenaline surge every time I narrowly avoided death. i sought out that adrenaline rush. women are not as inclined to pursue adrenaline and physical danger
I excelled in the trade because of my ability to accept my lack of competence, my competitive nature, my analytical tendencies, and my superior physical strength/agility. the latter 3 of these traits are more pronounced in males
like I said, the 2 women I know in the trade were exceptional. they displayed superior logical competence, spatial awareness, analysis, and were competitive in physical strength. these women are relatively rare compared to men.
trades are not biased towards men, it's just that men are biologically more likely to possess the traits necessary to excel in them
STEM and the trades are very, very different and should not be lumped together. Women outnumber men by a significant margin in biological sciences, for example. And more women than men have been graduating from medical school in the US every year since 2017. Similarly, more women than men have been graduating with PhDs across the board every year since 2020
So you just think women are shit at this job, except when not, and men are shit at this job, but less shit. Or something. You are shit at explaining yourself.
no. women are significantly less likely to excel in my field, due to their physical limitations compared to men.
"They" tried to trick them into coding for a decade for it to just be obsolete in the end.
feminists complained about lack of representation in stem sectors, so there was an effort to include women. now they are included
explain to be why feminists aren't complaining about the 9% female representation in trades?
Aren't we? Maybe we aren't asking loud enough. 😉
show me one example where feminists complained about not enough women plumbers, or lineman, or carpenters
https://www.wawomenintrades.com/
and what did that accomplish?
Edit: I concede the point that feminists advocate for women in trades
It provided an example (one as requested) of women asking/advocating to be in trades. Just because you aren't paying attention doesn't mean women aren't trying to get into these fields.
fair. i concede the point
Not trying to take any stance in your argument but you asked for one example and they gave you one(well not exactly complaining more like promoting).
You answer to that example is that they didn't achieve much which was also the OPs original point - that they should try harder.
So from the outsiders perspective you got what you wanted and agreed with their point.
you're right
they provided an example for me and I disregarded it.
i was wrong to say that there was no effort to include women in those fields.
