Why in the world would I bring the phone in the shower?
Why not? (The article says steam is a problem, so cold showers are alright)
I do it all the time. Before smart phones were a thing I had a water proof shower radio. Now I use the phone for the same thing. Mostly listening to news or a podcast or something. Sometime it's a Nebula video, but in the shower I'd just be listening to it like a podcast anyway. Before phones were waterproof I used to use a waterproof Bluetooth speaker.
I've never had steam cause a problem, but then again my showers aren't long, aren't very hot and my phone is kept pretty high up and out of the way.
So, why... oh, forget it.
Everyone uses their phones while eating or pooping. Those activities don't take long either. I choose to listen to something while showering.
It's ok if you don't understand it or do it yourself, but some people take their phone into the shower. It is a thing.

Nah. I had to do that the other day and lemme tell you, shampoo bottles just don’t hit the same these days.

"Everyone" does not use their phone while eating or pooping. I make an effort to engage with mine as little as possible, in a perfect world checking it when I wake up when I get home and before bed. For me the phone is a weird mix of useful tool and addictive drug, almost impossible to drop entirely but very much worth limiting access to. Constant stimulation is certainly a choice you can make, but probably not a healthy one. I view what you're doing the same way you might view someone saying they always drink a beer in the shower.

You can get a waterproof Bluetooth speaker pretty cheap. Better sound and zero risk of anything happening to the phone. I love mine.
Like a few other commenters, I had never even thought that taking your phone into the shower was a thing until I saw this post.
Just... why? Why risk it? Your average smart phone is anywhere from $500 to over $1000, so what's so important that you're deliberately exposing it to water and the risk of dropping it (especially if you're using shampoo, conditioner, soap or any other bathroom product designed to act as a cleaning agent)? Surely whatever it is can wait however long it is you're showering for?
Personally, I wouldn't want a friend/relative/whatever phoning me or answering the phone if they were in the shower or using the bathroom.
I can understand one of the other comments about using it to listen to podcasts/music/videos/etc., and at least in that case the phone is presumably far enough away (and not being regularly accessed) that it's at lower risk. Fair enough -- I sometimes do that whilst washing dishes. Still, I think I'd struggle trying to listen to something whilst actively showering -- too much other noise.
Put a bluetooth speaker in the shower instead of your phone; it's not like you can work the screen with wet hands anyway.
SInce my speaker stopped working, I've taken to putting the phone in a plastic baggie hanging from the curtain rod between the curtains.
The shower is the one place where I can have some peace and switch off. No news, no noise, no immediate crises that need solving. Just listen to the running water, enjoy for a bit, feel a little bit more relaxed and clean afterwards. A phone would achieve the exact opposite.

Seriously, if it survives being attached to me for 2-3 years, a little occasional steam damage is not going to be its biggest concern
I read my daily web fiction in the shower while I wake up. My iPhone 10 is still going strong after all these years of steam. Hell, it’s been dropped several times.

I had a "waterproof" e reader that was sitting in the bathroom directly opposite the shower for a week, the battery got fucked up and the case popped off

In case you don't actually know anybody under the age of about 35, the next time you are riding a bus or are a passenger in a car, start watching other drivers and see how many of them literally cannot put their phones down. Like even if they aren't actually looking at them while they drive, which is like a solid 30% of all drivers, another significant chunk is holding the phone even when not in use. The shower is not even a high bar at this point.

Wouldn't advise them to do that if they rent a car in Norway. The fine is about $1100 if they're caught, plus three points on the license.
We have fines and demerit points where I live, but they don't seem to be enforced often. Our cops are too busy...uh, I don't actually even know, but we sure pay them a lot (as an organization). Traffic enforcement seems to have gone down quite significantly in the past few years.

Obviously you do what 99.99999999% of people do. Nothing. Never clean it. Ever. From the day you buy it. At most you wipe the screen with some water. Maybe windex.

Also, I need a new phone - the steam has made my pixel 8 pro front camera all cloudy and my screen has started dying.
To be honest, that's a very expensive solution to feed what sounds like an internet addiction. I have a Pixel 8 Pro too, and it's still in as-new condition. I'll keep it till it breaks by itself

Of all addictions to have it could be worse. But it's actually the opposite. I love long warm showers - something about the water hitting my back whilst sitting on a stool that feels very relaxing. I have video essays going whilst I do that.
