I'm under the impression many Europeans mistake Romanis for Romanians. This could be one of the reason I Romanians are very harsh towards their Romani minority (so I heard): they don't want the stigma of "the country of thieves". But I obviously disagree with the stereotype that all Romani are thieves.
Is there any language that actually calls the Romani?
In English I hear "gypsy" more often, in Spanish "gitano". Neither of them can be confused with "romanian".
In Spain at least Romanians already have a stigma of being thieves, don't need to confuse them with gypsies to be racist against them.
I thought the gypsies we mistakenly call Romanians are actually mainly of the Romani people.
they is a lot of different culture of nomad people in Europe, that's why their is so may words. Gypsy, Yenish, Manouche, Romani, Tzigane, ...
However, their are stigmatized the same, through tziganophobia.
