Two guys standing at the pump at a Shell gas station. The guy at pump 2 holds up the gas pump nozzle to his ear and tells the guy at pump 1 “Apparently, if you hold a Shell pump to your ear you can hear the shareholders laughing at you”.

Pro tip, if gas is expensive, don't drive.

[–] sudoshakes@reddthat.com 1 points 1 hour ago

That doesn’t help the fact everything you need to buy which is transported goes up in price with gas prices to get it to you.

I made that choice two decades ago and I'm really glad to be car free. I moved away from a town without public transit and got jobs closer th where I live, or where I wouldn't need a car. Even today I'm passing lots of job opportunities in my field because they want me to drive a car from one site to another, and I insist on taking public transit, or a bike. I've even been told I'm not a real adult as long as I don't drive a car.

I'm telling the people around me that if they are to have a car, it should at least be electric, but both my mother and my sister bought a new car last year, and they're gas powered, because they "don't trust electric cars1!!1!". Well, pay and whine. Be real adults and pay for your fucking expensive gas.

Millions of people could try to get rid of their bad habits, free themselves from their addiction to cars, drive less, switch to electric, find alternatives. But no. The only solution is cheap gas. Everyone just needs cheap gas. The US and the west can interfere in other countries' elections, invade them, kidnap foreign leaders, hang them, kill a few hundred thousand civilians as "collateral damage", as long as we have cheap gas, all is well in the world. There's simply no other solution!

Now my commute to work is three hours, or twelve if I take my bike and I'm quick

[–] gmtom@lemmy.world -1 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

Maybe you should live closer to where you work? A 12 hour bike ride is easily over 100 miles.

But then housing would be 20x more expensive, but at least I'd save on the fuel?

[–] gmtom@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Because there's no in-between of living in the downtown of a city and living 100 miles away?

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 1 points 1 minute ago

A one hour car commute is fine, and no there is no in-between housing affordable anymore

[–] usrtrv@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 hours ago

And save on time. I've easily paid 2x the rent for smaller place to have a short and pleasant work commute. Honestly worth every penny.

[–] qarbone@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

You have to put some sort of "joke tag" on these. A /s or /j or something.

[–] gmtom@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I wouldn't even if I was joking.

If you chose to live 100 miles away from where you work, you can't really complain when you have a long commute.

It's not so easy to sell a house pick up and move, it's the type of answer you get from someone with enough to be mobile which excludes more than 90% of the country.

[–] CriticalThought@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Not to mention that living close to where the jobs are can be prohibitively expensive.

I'll go ahead and jump in before "you should have chosen a different line of work in a different part of the world where the problems you weren't expecting don't exist to the same extent yet."

[–] gmtom@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

This is kind of a false dichotomy. It's not like your only options are living downtown 2 mins walk from your office or living over 100 miles from your office.

100 miles is like working in Manhattan and living in Catskill. Which actually lines up pretty well with what OP said, Google says thats 3 hours by public transit and 12 hours by bike..... But it's also 2 hours 20 mins by car.....

[–] CriticalThought@lemmy.world 3 points 5 hours ago

FWIW, I agree it's not a binary, all or nothing situation. That said, circumstances change constantly (e.g., management no longer allowing remote work, divorce with joint custody of kids, or infinite other possibilities) that make a previously workable situation no longer work. I think the parent poster is correct, and the circumstances enabling relocation (including, but not limited to money) cannot be presumed.

Why would you buy a house 100 miles away from your job in the first place? / Why would you get a job 100 miles away from where you live?

And if you did do that, then just don't complain your commute is long? Like I'm not saying you're not allowed to do that or it makes you a bad person or some shit, just don't complain about how long your commute is.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago

You buy a house where you work, you don't work there anymore and it's not a small cost to move.
