I think the film would have been much "better" if we showed the horror and devistation that we caused. American media purposefully hides the death and destruction that we do, and paints ourselves as the good guys.
I really agree. For genuinely talking about the senseless horror of those bombings, especially the callous afterthought that was Nagasaki, I prefer Dan Carlin's podcast series.
Grave of the Fireflies should be on every American school's curriculum.
Unfortunately, it's like impossible to find on modern media. I was able to find a torrent, but I haven't been able to bring myself to watching it yet. I think it's the only Ghibli film that I haven't seen yet.
You could gently dip your toes in the water by starting with ‘Barefoot Gen’.
