There is a 3rd dimension this ignores. When both candidates are bad how do you voice that? How do you tell both parties this is not acceptable? If you hold your nose and vote, how do you stop getting more of the same?

It's a hostage situation, and I understand those who have decided they aren't negotiating with these people anymore.

The time to pick the candidates was back in the primaries. This late in the election, you're not voting for who you want, but instead voting against who you don't want.

Does it suck? Yes, but there are really 3 responses to this situation.

  1. Work within the system to change it. This involves voting in primaries, and supporting your preferred candidate, and voting against the worst candidate in the general, since that is how the electoral system (in the US) works.

  2. Work outside of the system to change it. Start a revolution, use forceful tactics. Acknowledge that the system is incapable of changing in the way you need it to. You aren't just refusing to participate, you're refusing to let the system operate.

  3. Accept the system and don't change anything. Stay home, and pretend that people acknowledge your lack of a vote and your refusal to be represented. Stand by as the Nazi thugs your apathy enables, take your family, friends, neighbors and eventually you, away. At least you can hold your head high when you get put against the wall, knowing that your silence totally absolves you from the consequences of your inaction.

You choose the option that you can better work with
