Alright, so I've heard of the Democrat who advertised for el-sayed's opponent. Why should we be excited about him over her, other than the pettiness?
Dude refused to buckle on trans support.
Edit: I see the dogpile starting above. I assumed the question was asked in good faith, since we can't really expect everyone to keep up with everything. And I just regurgitated the last best thing I remembered about a long and eventful campaign season.
I like the spirit of this comment and want to keep it going.
I am excited about El-Sayed because of all the people who had a real shot at this position, he showed the most compassion for humanity. How often do you get to say that about a fucking senate race?
Here's a list of reasons, but the very fact that he's willing to say "oligarchs" on his site should get the point across.
For myself, there are things I can't flip on, no matter what, and to me charting a stable course over time matters. El-Sayed has never changed his tune: he wants Medicare for all, he wants Trump held accountable, and he wants big money out of politics. He believes it, he preaches it, he has never deviated from it for a second as far as I know, and he seems legitimately excited about getting those things done. And me, I want all those things too, so for me it's an easy call (or would be, if I were in Michigan).
On the other hand, who fucking knows what Haley Stevens believes anymore. She's not even a member of her state's Democratic Party at this point, and she's made a point of publicly turning her back on every Dem colleague on the hill who supported her. Even if she got reelected tomorrow, with all the personal bridges she's burned, what could she possibly get done? No one will trust her now. Her constituents are fucked. It's good she's leaving in January, and even better that she lost the primary, IMO.
