I applaud the sentiment, but uhm… I don't think the comparison is helpful. Fighting external enemies is very different from fighting fascism from within. The "the state champions freedom" vs "the state is tyranny" kind of different.

[–] Fusselwurm@feddit.org 62 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Like… our main problem today is not guns and ships.

The main problem is media, i.e. the propaganda system that keeps MAGAts happy to shoot themselves in the foot.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 26 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

The Conservative Propaganda Machine.

Before this is over, it will have to dealt with as the National Security Threat it is.

[–] Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

But you are the media in this world. Everybody here is generating media everyday. Traditional media was replaced with Facebook and Twitter and reddit. How many leftist removed themselves from there? Is it any surprise that the whole world seems like it's using right wing talking points anymore. The left fucked themselves and most still don't get what has happened here

[–] Fusselwurm@feddit.org 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

"social" media is prone to promoting fear & hate, unless it's heavily moderated. Twitter & Facebook completely fail in that regard. Leftift voices leaving these platforms is a consequence of that, not the cause.

[–] Melvin_Ferd@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Fuck moderation. Moderation is a big part of how we got here.

They boxed people into sanitized communities. Look at the biggest groups here or on reddit. It's usually only headlines. Very little discussion. No interpretation. Mods removed anyone they felt were 'trolls' it left only homogeneous spaces. No insight. Just people all agreeing with each other saying like 10 phrases over and over again.

Moderators, especially in left-leaning spaces, have turned disagreement into a bannable offense. If you do not perfectly align, you are out. Moderators enforce purity.

I posted a clip recently of an agitator burning a flag at a protest and then running away. It had hundreds of upvotes. A mod deleted it and said it was because they did not like it. That is not moderation. That is controlling what people are allowed to see.

People keep pretending the real fight is in the streets. It is not. If powerful institutions did not believe online spaces mattered, they would not spend billions shaping them. They understand the battleground. For some reason the leftist haven't figured it out.

We need to go back to basics. Moderation should be minimal. Mods should handle illegal or truly extreme content and nothing else. Everything else should be decided by the community. That is why upvotes and downvotes exist. Why was that forgotten

keeps ~~MAGAts~~ everyone happy to shoot themselves in the foot.

Imagine living through the last 30 years and honestly thinking you weren't voting for your own decimating because you picked the blue fascist team. Obama had all the power he needed to stop the WoT, the Patriot Act, the militarization of police, and the corruption of Wall Street in its tracks, but nope.

Instead he laid down the fascist asphalt so Donald could joyride.

[–] 7101334@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

Obama had all the power he needed to stop the WoT, the Patriot Act, the militarization of police, and the corruption of Wall Street in its tracks, but nope.

The ruling stating that presidents have complete immunity from persecution for acts taken in the official capacity as president, in which the judges made it clear that could even include assassinating political rivals, did not pass during Trump's administration.

It passed during Biden's administration. The Supreme Court basically told him "you can assassinate Trump and nothing would happen to you." He didn't even pursue him for persecution.

Democrats are not just useless, they're complicit.

[–] ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.world 0 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

We're not there yet, man, give it another year or so, maybe another Dem admin? lol. They've been playing good cop/bad cop for idk how long and these people keep falling for it! Despite Obama droning his way into a Peace Prize, and imperialist moves made regardless of which color is leading the nation, they still think they can 'vote blue' their way out of it. And at this point in America, voting is just virtue signalling. 🤷

[–] LesserAbe@lemmy.world 14 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Better if it shows a Confederate soldier?

We will beat them again. It's just a question of how much suffering until then, and how much we actually root out the ideology.

[–] Mantzy81@aussie.zone 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Reconstruction was never truly complete and allowed for a full range of "compromises". The attitude and feelings remained the same.

Quite sad that 175 years later and the arguments have changed very little.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 11 points 4 days ago

To give some context to how little it's changed even in rhetoric. Confederate leaders were fear mongering about socialism.

[–] LesserAbe@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I didn't do shit because I wasn't alive then. And clearly they're not gone, because here they are. But you may note that slavery is illegal now. Not enough but not nothing. If you want to doom keep it to yourself.

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 0 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Your for-profit prison system belies that particular claim.

[–] LesserAbe@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What are you trying to accomplish here? Is your message to any Americans of conscience "no, you can't beat fascists"? Don't be a dick and don't be defeatist

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca -1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The message is: "try harder this time and don't forget to follow through".

Edit: oh and I'd like to add "good luck". No sarcasm.

[–] GlitchyDigiBun@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago (4 children)

They forfeited the right to be called my countrymen when they spat on the founding principles of the nation. They are foreign to the American ideal.

[–] 7101334@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

They are foreign to the American ideal.

What ideal would that be? Manifest Destiny, the genocidal land theft from indigenous people followed by enslaving Africans to build the nation?

This is America, and underneath the rhetoric and the eagles, always has been America. You've just been brainwashed into believing otherwise.

[–] architect@thelemmy.club 1 points 2 days ago

And America is the extension of Britain and you know how they are!

[–] Zoot@reddthat.com 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yeah but they don't have an entire world of countries using guns and bombs to tell them that.

Fighting fascism is a whole lot easier when it decides to start a world War, every other instance they just continue on within their own borders.

[–] sausager@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

We're trying to avoid the whole world war part but it'll come if these assholes continue

[–] raspberriesareyummy@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Unfortunately if a world war comes it will likely be to bomb civilians while the megacorps make deals with all parties to stay clear of their production lines...

[–] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Then we blow up the production lines with fireworks if need be.

[–] raspberriesareyummy@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

if the thugs & bombs don't get to us first...

[–] sausager@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

History will be written by the Eric and Donald jrs of the world. 🤢

[–] raspberriesareyummy@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Bold of you to assume they can write.

[–] sausager@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

They'll do it the same way trump "wrote" a book

The founding principles of the nation are might makes right and don't whine, there's no truth nor justice in the world, and the US has behaved exactly that way from their Anglo-Saxon conception by crusading into America annihilating the locals, then enjoying slavery, then destabilising nations around the world post WW2 power reshuffle, pillaging, murdering and raping their way across the land for geopolitical and financial advantages. In the little time it's been a thing, it's accumulated sins for thousands of years. Get real, man, if you know any moral, righteous, prosocial and selfless Americans (maybe yourself included!) they are so despite their culture, not because of it.

[–] 14specks@lemmy.ml 3 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I would consider a different point of view which is that ICE is a much closer representation of the "American ideal" than where you and your community stand. A study of key events of U.S. history backs this up, in my opinion. The founding ideals had much more to do with the supremacy of white, land owning, christian men than anything else.

As time has passed I think the definition of "white" has been reshaped, and women have been brought in a bit closer, but the United States government has never stood for the equality of all people. This illusion was able to be maintained in much of the late 20th century by exporting the oppression of the underclass to people in other countries.

I'd encourage people to reflect on whether or not their ideals of equality of people were ever "American" in nature, or if it might be necessary to oppose the United States government to achieve this vision.

[–] tocopherol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Even during the founding of the US there were abolitionists, anti-racists and what we would call today communist and anarchists. US history has been driven by the white supremacist's agenda, but there has always been a strong push against it. The state has always been a minority as far as the number of people, and I think many 'Americans' do see the US as a bastion of freedom for refugees and people of all races. That has been the promoted image of the US, obviously we know the state doesn't adhere to that idealized version but many people here do seem to see that image as the 'true America'.

It is necessary to oppose that racist state, but the US government is not really representative of much of the nation of 'America'.

[–] 14specks@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 days ago

Totally

Right, many people do see it that way. Particularly with the resources and modern interpretations we have available in 2026, we can look back through history and see how that was a lie (or at least "propaganda" of some form). It's fine if you want it to be true, but in reality the US constitution did not build a truly democratic government structure (this was by design). I think current events (beyond the Donald Trump presidencies) clearly illustrate that nothing short of a new constitutional convention will be able to resolve this.

If there were a new constitution, it would no longer be the "United States of America" as we know it today, of course, it would be something else entirely.

[–] GlitchyDigiBun@lemmy.world -1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'll punch a Nazi with you, but that .ml tag tells me you're too far off the deep end to have a meaningful conversation about this.

[–] 14specks@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Why so rude? What is even the "deep end"?

If any suggestion of "consider this other point of view" provokes such a reaction, I guess you aren't wrong, but isn't that simple closed-mindedness on your part?

Is there anything I can clarify about what I meant?

[–] ArgumentativeMonotheist@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You're very nice to these propagandised sheep (and it's the only way to consistently get your message across, ofc), thank you for your service.

[–] 14specks@lemmy.ml 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

We all started somewhere! Nobody is immune to propaganda.

[–] 7101334@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I started as a libertarian... I was 15, but there's hope for everyone.

[–] 14specks@lemmy.ml 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Anyone who has read theory and applied to their worldview knows that class consciousness will naturally arise as the contradictions of capitalism continue to sharpen. I might be out ahead of some people are at, but I notice among my friends that what I say takes root and males more sense to them weeksnor months after the conversation.

[–] 7101334@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

"Being a leftist in America is being right first and having everyone be angry at you for it"

[–] 7101334@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Not to mention that America inspired the Nazis, and after we "beat them", we hired them to run NASA and NATO...

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago

There is the third type of fighting as well. I don't know what that is but trump once said "Fight! Fight! Fight!" during a political theatre event a while back. So that's three. /s

[–] Steve@startrek.website 3 points 4 days ago

Maybe the weapon is being held by a European liberator

[–] DylanMc6@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 days ago

Are you fedposting?

[–] scarabic@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Yeah it’s wishful reduction to think it’s as simple as this.
