Soil, especially soil in urban settings, can be contaminated with heavy metals, etc.

I kinda gave up and embraced the whole "acceptable amounts" thing. Like, we couldn't even detect most of this stuff a couple of generations ago - levels probably are fairly acceptable (even if gross).
