What's the point of satire if it can't keep up with how bizarre reality has become?

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 59 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That was a thing during the first Trump administration. Comedians were complaining because anything Trump did would immediately be pale in comparison to what he did next. Just one really stupid thing after another.

[–] diabetic_porcupine@lemmy.world 21 points 4 days ago

For my next act - nuclear holocaust!!

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 19 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Satire right now is funny when it's normal.

LOOK, A DAY WITH NO NEWS, HOW FUNNY

This is why the creators of Veep ended their show.m when Trump got elected.

Couldn't they just animate literally any white house press conference and call it a day?

[–] jade52@lemmy.ca 58 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Yes. The show has been writing itself since 2016.

[–] M137@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago (2 children)

It's kinda been writing itself from the very start. There are always enough weird, funny and fucked up things going on to make episodes about. I think it's just harder now because of how quickly everything happens and how much there is to choose from.

[–] anytimesoon@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago

Theres a super cool documentary call something like 6 days to air where you see the creative process of a south park episode.

The tldw is that they start with nothing on the Monday and write, animate and record the whole thing by the Saturday air time.

I mean, the oval office meeting where Trumpy pooped his pants is a good place to start.

Cartman should freak out about it while no one else cares.

Then Stan tells him they won't be held accountable and it's never brought up again.

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 40 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Alternatively, Cartman is in the files (because Epstein used his paint the walls in shit revenge service to prank one of the actual visitors to the island) and when told he can make the girls do anything he wants, he gets one to make fun of Kyle on video, where he is clearly being an asshole to her.

And Butters is also in the file because they tried to recruit him after he went viral for What, What, In the Butt, which Cartman latches on to and spends the whole episode trying to help Butters clear his name (so that he can clear his own name in the process).

Also Randy is on the list because he was trying to get them to sign Tegrity Farms up as their official weed supplier and he spends the episode trying to supress the information entirely but gets Streisand effected hard, leading to the follow up episode where Trump tries to pin the whole thing on Randy (and everything else, too, and starts bringing up shit that isn't even public). In the end, Randy gets "one of the harshest punishments ever given to a rich person": a fine for $3.50, and everyone realizes that it wasn't a judge presiding over the case, but a 3-story crustacean known as the Lochness Monster and the episode ends with everyone getting together to yell at Nessie (and the incident is never mentioned again).

Now that "Anti-woke" ideology has been revealed as a psyop by the Epstein files, I'm very curious to see if Trey Stone and Matt Parker will choose to reckon with their own contributions or if they'll double-down.

[–] Tyrq@lemmy.dbzer0.com 26 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Anti PC culture was already around for a long time, it just got tossed into overdrive with the 4chan Epstein stuff, they're pretty self aware though, so we'll see

[–] FrChazzz@lemmus.org 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Yep. I remember the film PCU quite well. It was a very nineties sentiment in some circles to push back against "political correctness." IIRC Matt and Trey at one point had to explain to people in the early days that they weren't conservatives, it was just that they felt that "liberals" tended to be easier to make fun of most of the time (particularly self-righteous celebrities).

I sure hope whatever they come up with will be better than AI slop.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 14 points 4 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

TBF that ~~AI~~ video of Trump trudging through the desert is top tier.

Edit: I'm wrong, it's not AI

[–] hubobes@piefed.europe.pub 18 points 4 days ago (1 children)
[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 41 points 4 days ago

Many assumed after the “South Park” Season 27 premiere aired that its entire climactic sequence was created using AI. The new BTS images, however, reveal that not only was it practically filmed, but the micropenis featured in it was really Parker’s finger.

Haha that's a great pic

[–] Liuone@lemmy.world 35 points 4 days ago (4 children)

South Park sucks now. Kyle and Stan said that, and since they are Matt and Trey, i don't think they enjoy writing this crap. It's that they can't stay silent about it, so I personally think they hate that. And I hate it too, everything about Trump makes me want to vomit.

[–] abigscaryhobo@lemmy.world 17 points 4 days ago (4 children)

They're making the big bucks. Theyve regularly tried to get the show cancelled with that joke of "South Park Sucks Now" they even got the hashtag #cancelsouthpark trending on purpose. If they really wanted to walk away, they could. But they just keep coming back with more and more ridiculous demands for pay and they keep getting it.

Whenever they take on real world stuff, they're incredibly smug and sanctimonious about it. This has been the case since the start, and I can't say I've ever been able to get past that.

Yeah, like, what'll they do with all that "eating infant intestines" material.

Life has become too surreal to have any hope of parodying. I've "eaten the onion" at least 4 times in the past 12 months.

[–] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 10 points 3 days ago (6 children)

Eating the onion is when you believe satire is real, what is it called when you see real and believe it has to be satire?

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago

At this point it's called cope.

I feel like i'm about to regret this big time but, the "baby intestines" thing...it's in the files right? It's a bad joke or is it there?

This meme looks like those scummy mobile game ads lol 😂

[–] zammy95@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

All it's missing is the little x that brings up the app store instead of closing the ad

[–] JackFrostNCola@aussie.zone 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

And the actual x pops up ten seconds after the decoy x, and its only 2px in diameter on a touch screen interface

[–] cattywampas@lemmy.world 27 points 4 days ago (2 children)

ngl I miss the days of Mr. Hankey and Mecha Streisand.

I seem to be the only one confused by this - what leak? Is it just a typo?

A leak is when something is released without authorisation? So far the only information is authorised releases of the files with lots of stuff redacted, and allegations there is more being held back. Has there been a leak too?

[–] zikzak025@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

There were a couple instances where they accidentally released unredacted versions of files before they realized and replaced them with redacted versions, but that's all I can recall off the top of my head. One instance of that occured last week.

I think there may have been some documents released without authorization before, but I can't recall when, just a vague recollection.

I'm afraid that we are in a point where reality is much worse and bizarre than anything Parker and Stone could imagine.

so they write an episode about some of their classmates getting abducted to be used at krasnov's pleasure dome? that is not a fun episode to write.

[–] Rolder@reddthat.com 13 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (3 children)

they already wrote an episode where some of the kids met up with adults because they thought it was something else (and it was actually some adult shit)

Edit: Episode name of “Cartman joins NAMBLA”

Nothing they can possibly write could be much more surreal or offensive than reality.
