Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

I just moved and bought a cot to sleep on. With a yoga mat on it, it's actually as comfortable as any bed I've ever slept on!

I'm considering keeping it long term, but I would like to have "company" over some day.

[–] Cracks_InTheWalls@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Keep it - you can either gift it to someone who needs it more down the road, or have an option if someone needs to crash who isn't 'company'. Also nice for camping if you're into that and have room to bring it.

Haven't used it a lot but my cot has come in clutch a couple of times.

"Cringe culture is dead! Let people enjoy things" crowd when they have to defend Garten of Banban fans and not scenecore sparkledog furry art

The fuck does that even mean?

[–] pirc_lover@feddit.uk 20 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (2 children)

If you want a serious answer: garten of banban is a videogame that broadly follows five nights at Freddie’s style of evil corrupted fluffy things, and Markiplier etc. have played it (I think?).

Scenecore sparkledog furry art as a phrase is aggressively queer to the point of being a funny caricature.

The final piece of the puzzle is the rallying cry ‘cringe culture is dead’. It’s popular on places like tumblr etc. and is used to push back on the social pressure of cringe culture, that often affects people who are queer or nerds or furries etc.

So we have the joke: ‘tumblr-y people pushing back against cringe culture when they have to defend people who enjoy a piece of media that is (not AI) slop pushed out to jump on the FNAF trend.’

To clarify: I am in favour of letting people enjoy things.

[–] SayJess@piefed.blahaj.zone 6 points 15 hours ago

Thanks for the explainer! I am also in favor of letting people enjoy things. I know that to most, I’m weird. Glass houses and all.

[–] SlurpingPus@lemmy.world 4 points 21 hours ago

Me when both FNAF and furry art are some freaky kids' stuff:

Haha...no, not really.

[–] inari@piefed.zip 7 points 1 day ago

I'm not online enough to know either

Top picture oop only has a single room to.live in, and a cot to sleep on, and is asking for advice on making the most of it. And these comments, holy shit. Wasn't expecting that level of classism on Lemmy. Especially 196.

[–] espurr@sopuli.xyz 0 points 2 hours ago

Dunno, we all migrated to lemmy because we feel superior over Reddit

[–] konim@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 day ago

Honestly empty room is pretty easy. It's the people that have a bunch of stuff that make people think "is this a serial killer or are they just weird?" thats hard. You can tell they really like their stuff and you have to convince them to tone it down for new people.

When my room has been this empty it's usually because I just moved and couldn't afford to move much or had to sell a bunch to afford the move. Just ask the people you're close to (ones you're leaving, ones you'll stay in contact with, and new people you meet) if they can make you some type of art to make your room feel more inviting. You already have a pride flag, seeing your friends terrible drawings, 4am and high quotes, etc is all you really need to add to make at least an inviting wall. Furniture is definitely nice and encouraged, but if youre living like this you need to be reminded you're not really alone, not necessarily stuff at first. But please at least get a used side table at some point so you're not spilling food in bed lol, speaking from experience.

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

probably should go up against the wall in the corner (feet facing the viewer, head facing the AC unit)

[–] GreenCrunch@piefed.blahaj.zone 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Yeah, but then when the AC runs it'll blow directly on you and you'll be freezing!

[–] dandelion@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't think so, in the corner is less directly in the path of the flow of the AC unit, it's more like it would be blowing to your left - which could still make you cold, but probably no worse than being directly in front of it like it is now

Ah, good point, I didn't think about that, looking at it again that makes sense.

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Good. I can toss my other blanket on top and get snuggled in.

[–] GreenCrunch@piefed.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

All good until you don't want to get out of bed in the morning because it's freezing...

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I have always wanted a programmable thermostat, so I can sleep to nice cool air, but wake up to almost uncomfortably hot, because that will force me to get out of bed and be something resembling human.

Instead I'm a burrito, all wrapped up and warm

[–] GreenCrunch@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I feel like the energy usage of cooling then heating would be crazy though... Perhaps a localized solution, like a space heater pointed at the bed on a timer or smart outlet, so you're getting direct heat only in the morning, only in bed.

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 3 points 1 day ago

Oh, my rooms tend to get hot by themselves, so it's less "cool it then heat it" and more "cool it, then stop cooling and let it warm up naturally around morning"

Except in winter, I guess. Then it's just "don't heat until morning"

[–] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.blahaj.zone 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Why wouldn't I defend people enjoying Garten of Banban? It just looks like a standard mascot horror game, and there's nothing inherently wrong with those. Unless the developers are as bigoted as the FNAF dev or the game has genuinely immoral content, I see no problem with it.

[–] Truscape@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's of poor quality - although that's a subjective take from someone who's only seen other people's gameplay.

[–] TotallynotJessica@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Who cares? I don't care if it's camp or genuinely bad; so long as there's isn't anything really fucked up about it, why shouldn't people enjoy it?

[–] subiprime@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

exactly,, but people are mean,,,,

then they are never gonna be free from cringe culture

[–] potatoguy@mbin.potato-guy.space 15 points 1 day ago (2 children)

who took a photo of my studio apartment?

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

Shit, maybe they are still there, hiding! Quick, do a thorough search!

I prefer SROs over studios, it's nice to share some capital (fridge, stove, laundry, dishwasher, livingroom sofa) with neighbors.

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'd be a little concerned with the AC directly over the heater, but if that's the only place it can go...

[–] wetsoggybread@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Its fine. Seeing as its a window ac unit there likely isn't anywhere else to put it and its not like they're going to have both running at once and the baseboards don't often have a thermostat in them, its somewhere else so it should be fine to put the ac there

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

Put them both on full blast and see which one wins.

[–] CaliforniaSober@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

You should totally add a thing.

[–] python@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

man I would actually go insane in OOPs room. Like at least get a carpet aaaah

[–] Manifish_Destiny@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Carpet?

Like where hair lives?

[–] EatMyPixelDust@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Are there people who actually live like this? I genuinely don't understand...

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 4 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

You don't always get a choice.

[–] EatMyPixelDust@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Fair, okay, my question is then, does anyone choose to live like this? And if so, why?

Some. Some folks are naturally kind of ascetic, others aren't really but have difficulty justifying letting themselves have things. But most of the time the OP picture is a function of circumstances.

[–] Ryanmiller70@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago

Yeah where's the gaming/PC setup?
