Reminds me of the final pages of chapter 3 of the second volume of Maus (1991) in which a Jewish survivor of the Holocaust acts egregiously and unrepentantly racist to a black hitchhiker, surprising a friend who thought that the suffering would have engendered empathy for discriminated races.

Torture damages people, plain and simple; don't expect victims to gain wisdom or empathy from the process. So, maybe don't give them nukes and back the religious megalomaniacs among them who end up committing the same genocidal practices against others such as the Palestinians.

There are something like 100k Israelis who are still alive and survived the Holocaust. That is mostly just due to the Holocaust ending over 80years ago and people die of old age.

Honestly I dislike the constant Holocaust comparisons. They play into Israeli propaganda, as the connection between Israel and Jews is very obvious and Jews were the victims of the Holocaust. That makes Israel look like a victim just defending itself.

It's hard to explain to someone who can only hold one sentence in working memory that the holocaust was bad because it was a genocide and that what Isreal is doing is bad because it's a genocide. It's like a fixed number of words, letters, or syllables. They fixate on presumption and emotion because they cannot engage with intellectual debate. I'm strawman-ing a bit, but I don't know how we prevent people like this sinking the entire ship.

They fixate on presumption and emotion because they cannot engage with intellectual debate.

People usually have an emotional standpoint first and then construct an intellectual argument for that emotional position. Also they mostly just ignore facts, that do not line up with their world view and if you "win" an argument, they usually just shut you out. So the best way is to go for emotions first.

Jews were some of the the victims of the Holocaust.

There, FTFY.

These arent victims. These are people who shared an ethnicity with and largely derided those victims. They are not traumatized. They wete started before world war two by a literal cecil rhodes fanboy. They had an SS unit. They attempted to fully ally with the nazi regime, and the only reason they didnt is because hitler was the fucking voice of reason in that room. Imagine being so viciously genocidal and monsterous that literal adolf hitler is the fucking moderate who calls you crazy.

I think its no longer politically safe totalk about the holocaust as something that happened to european jews. It did, but they were not the first group exterminated, and they were not the group most completely exterminated. They just took more work because there were so many of them and they were such a part of so many european cultures. Its no longer safe to be that sloppy and some correctives are called for. The holocaust happened to queers, ro roma, to communists. Some jews died there, but many did not. Most other groups targetted cannot say the same.

Even today, there is no equivalent for queer culture to what berlin was before the nazis. The roma have not recovered fully. Political repression of the left has continued unabated. Speaking of the holocaust as a uniwuely or even primarily jewish suffering is just fucking zio shit.

Not really. It's pretty simple and clear.

[–] hayvan@piefed.world 3 points 1 week ago

Singular, it is one layer.

"In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart."

I wish I could, Anne.

Just like Oscar Schindler did in Nazi Germany.

Who would have thought that the lesson that the Jews would take from the Holocaust was "Pay It Forward?"

You have to admit they took an attempted genocide 80 years ago and spun it in a great business model. You can't criticize anything they do no matter how horrific.

Almost as if losing 6 million of their own in the past was worth being able to use the same tactics on others today.

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Well, that's the thing, it's not "their own", it's just people who happen to share the same religion as these shit-stains.

Jews in Israel aren't even mostly descendants from people who were impacted by the Holocaust - most Jews who moved to Israel came from Russia and the Middle East, not Western Europe.

More broadly "All Jews are the same" is always Racism, not just when used to claim there's some kind of problem with all Jews but also when used to claim there's some kind of quality of all Jews or that somehow the victimization of some Jews magically made victims of other Jewish people who were not the victims, are not family of the victims and didn't even know the victims.

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Also it's not like being related by blood to holocaust survivors would give you a pass to commit genocide. Even if they were.

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

True.

It's only JUST for the actual victims and their direct descendants to punish and get compensation from the aggressors and those supported them, nobody else.

That's it.

That's how far the Principle Of Justice sides with them.

For even those who were once victims, to hurt and take things from people whole unrelated to that past aggression is NOT JUST. In fact the Principle Of Justice now sides with those they hurt and harmed - in this situation it is they who are the agressors and the others who are the victims so it is they who should be punished and compensate their victims.

For people who bare no relation even to said past victims other than being born into the same ethnicity to hurt and take things from others is way, way worse. These people are pure aggressors in every sense of the word, the worst of the worst and per the Principle Of Justice deserving of the harshest kind of punishment. That they're leveraging Racism to try and get cover from the past victimization of other people who share nothing with them other than ethnicity for their own victimization of others is just them adding a cherry of hypocrisy on the top of the shit cake of their evil-doing.
