The period of occupation in WWII in Iceland is actually called The Situation

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

New Jersey had a similar period in time

[–] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

And it was equally dark and scary.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

A kind of dark that was halfway to blackface.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

ughyurs in china call it "the situation" too.

The Circumstances implies we found ourselves here. The Consequences would be more appropriate, as we placed ourselves in this position.

The Big Find Out

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 2 points 1 week ago

The consequences makes it sound too passive idk. We should keep searching for a name.

The Gangstering would be more accurate. As in effect, and in reality, our government has been seized by gangsters.

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

And for what? What is anyone gaining here?

[–] inari@piefed.zip 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

...because of the implications...

Too bad they were unforseen

[–] bedwyr@piefed.ca 3 points 1 week ago

Many foresaw these circumstances just fine.

We don't talk about the Event

[–] dave@feddit.uk 5 points 1 week ago

Stay indoors.

That's actually a good idea, reminds me of the Troubles in Norther Ireland. Wouldn't be surprised if terrorism would be on the rise, especially after the dismantling of USAID.

There was a MeidasTouch Video a week ago which touched on the subject, where the US Military admitted that they lost a lot of access to intel in Africa, and what little intel they got points into the direction that paramilitaries and terrorist groups are thriving and building up large amounts of ressources.

Sometimes powered by Russia. Or, more peacefully, by China.

the Troubles

I'm always a little surprised that's a 20th century term. It sounds medieval.

The Trumpbles

To the tune of Pomp and Circumstance, Trump and Circumstances

[–] gerald_eliasweb@reddthat.com 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I remember hearing a NPR podcast episode about how they call it "The thing" in Venezuela so if the police never know if people are talking about the kidnaping or the price of bread.

I always wondered in school why the IRA were the " bad guys". I think everyone else thought IRA was a type of beer.

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 1 points 6 days ago

I was surprised to learn that a black and tan wasn't the best name for a drink. Like Irish car bomb seems pretty obvious but more people are less familiar with black and tan.

The MAGA Turmoil, aka The Idiocy.

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

Circumstances, such a vague word. Like consequences.
