Tomatoes are one of the easiest plants to grow. Even on an apartment patio. You can do it in a Home Depot bucket just punch some holes in the bottom.

Cherry tomatoes especially pay for themselves. I would not recommend heirloom cherry tomatoes, they tend to be smaller. In some cases, hybridization is a good thing.

Recommend Cherokee Purple as your general tomato. The flavor is much better than anything out of a grocery store. Pure tomato. It’s so delicious you can eat it like an apple.

Very forgiving plant for gardening nooba.

Honestly, unless you live in a climate where they just don't grow, grow your own tomatoes.

Even in the north of England, I grow tomatoes in pots and they taste like I've just flown them in from Greece

I’m talking even among home grown, Cherokee purple is a great tomato.

I literally have 4 plants growing outside right now in a tiny patch. And 5 extra in cups inside I'm trying to give away.

All started from a pack of seeds from the dollar tree.

They just need a lot of sun.

Grow like weeds.

Do you think you could grow them on a Juliette balcony? A thicket of cherry tomatoes would be a great backdrop for zoom meetings.

You made me curious since we have one that is trying to devour our other plants from its bucket on our patio. Looks like I don't have to replant!

That is cool, thanks!

Honestly, by fall I’m just chucking the tomatoes straight into the compost because no one wants anymore for free

Haven’t had the gear or skills until this year. Definitely gonna give it a shot and see if I die or not from the effort or results.

Ball canning guide. It’s proven itself, for decades. Best to stay away from randos vlogging their opinions. That, and grandma, if she’s done it her whole life. You’re here, so she must’ve done it right.

Thanks! I’ll pick up a copy, both grandmas are passed. Not from food borne illness.

Deer can technically jump a 6ft fence but the only time I’ve seen it happen is when someone forgot to close the gate. The deer was chased out and panic jumped the 6ft fence. Generally, they’re out there all the time and haven’t jumped the fence to get in and we even have Apple trees.

I don’t think a roll of 4ft wire fence with T-posts would work.

Either way, fencing gets pricy.

Omg. And they're from the Americas...

This is like rice becoming expensive somewhere in Asia-Pacfic.

Maybe I should have savored the tomato I flicked out of my taco supreme at lunch...

[–] NoForwadSlashS@piefed.social 6 points 1 week ago

Savoured? You could have sold it on for a couple of bucks!

That topsy turvy tomato planter is about to get really popular.

our WF stopped selling organic jalapeno recently because somewhere along the chain it got jacked up in price, so they sell the cheaper non-organic versions.
