The president had said living here, in the nation’s 26th-most-populous city, was like “living in hell.” Portlanders mostly met the news with confusion.

Violent crime and homicide rates in Portland have been declining over the past few years. According to FBI data between 2014 and 2024, the violent crime rate peaked in 2021, while the homicide rate topped out in 2022. The number of violent crimes has been lower in the first seven months of this year, compared with the same period in 2024, according to data from the Portland Police Department.

No offense to the people there, but this is what matters: cold, objective facts, not their vibes.

No. Being that there’s no war there, that was an easy question.

Border patrol surveillance helicopters were flying over Portland yesterday. I wonder if he was watching the feeds.

[–] altphoto@lemmy.today 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Portland is terrible! They have this welding shop that just totally rules and the guys there must fight ninja snipers just to get to work every day. Oh you think that's funny? You've fought ninja snipers? Well these are gay! Gay ninja snipers! There's rumor that there are trans gay ninja snipers from the LGBTQ legion among them....you can hold a Katana with your asshole, but believe me, the trans gay ninjas can swing one. Terrible situation, needs nukes.

If they serve a brunch buffet, then I am going.

Even taking the question seriously is sane-washing the President's delusions.

[–] Bwaz@lemmy.world 23 points 3 days ago (1 children)

No, not confusion. All of us here in Portland know that Trump's statement is 100% bullshit, whether from Trump being fed bullshit by FOX News et al, or by Trump making up the lie itself.

There is literally nowhere else on earth I'd want to live more than Portland, OR. Any of his 'fires everywhere" would just be people having backyard barbecues or cookong in food pods.

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 10 points 3 days ago (2 children)

My understanding is that it comes from watching B roll of other protests on Fox

"I spoke to the governor, she was very nice," Trump said. "But I said, 'Well wait a minute, am I watching things on television that are different from what's happening? My people tell me different.' They are literally attacking and there are fires all over the place...it looks like terrible."

Capitalism.

[–] xyzzy@lemmy.today 6 points 3 days ago

You're so close, Donald. "But wait, is Fox News lying to and manipulating me?"

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 24 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I’m in Portland, can confirm, it’s not safe to go outside because of all the sniper fire and improvised explosives and people changing lanes in the highway 26 tunnel and how the rent is too damn high and the good food trucks are far away.

[–] crystalmerchant@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Don't change lanes in the tunnel!! Geez people. So rude.

...change lanes after the tunnel and swoop into the 26 east exit

Flying out of PDX tomorrow. I fitted the homeless crusher to my car to make through the i5 to i84 to i205 route. No idea how I'll fight off the mobs of antifa while waiting for the shuttle in blue lot.

[–] DaMummy@lemmy.world 17 points 3 days ago

Seeing as how he declared war on Americans, and there's Americans all throughout Oregon, yes. And also, seeing how he's bombing random fishing boats, Oregon also borders an ocean, so it's like 115% invading Americans and fisherman.

[–] BossDj@piefed.social 16 points 3 days ago

Another school day tomorrow. Did you know that in the city of Portland, there aren't school buses for high schoolers because they just take the city bus for free. Just a snippet.

Trump hates free places with free thought. He hates freedom. I think Republicans get angry when people aren't fighting like dogs to prove their masculinity and subduing their women

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 10 points 3 days ago

Oh yeah. He likes to shit on chicago but its an awesome place. His definition of hellhole is anything with decent public transit.

[–] Atropos@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Portland resident here, AMA I guess....

[–] Mediocre_Bard@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Is Slappy Cakes still around? I like that place.

[–] Atropos@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sure is, had to look it up though. Recommend it?

[–] Mediocre_Bard@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Well, it's always busy, but can be worth it. There is a hot plate in the center of the table that you make your pancakes on. The food is decent; I just like drawing funny things and then eating them. Appealing for kids, and for kid-hearted adults.

[–] Atropos@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Sounds like fun, thanks!

[–] silence7@slrpnk.net 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Tell me, are the crickets still singing in Portland?

[–] Atropos@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Yeah, they're still going. It was warmer today, so there's quite the chorus right now.

[–] mbp@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Wanna hang out at Keys Lounge Tuesday for the Jazz night?

[–] Atropos@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

Normally, love hanging out - but Tuesday is D&D night!

Do you how how to tell if trump is lieing? His lips are moving.

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 days ago

Trump: it's not war ravaged? It's okay, we can fix that

I wonder when he's going to deploy them to IB, not San Diego, IB. Since it's one of a couple of cities that border Tijuana, and we only have 25,000 residents, I can only assume it will be soon.
