They tried this in the states, but they were riddled with bulletholes and cost too much to replace. They went back to real children, for economic and cultural reasons.

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 23 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Damn, that went dark fast.

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 10 points 3 weeks ago

For the children, too

[–] RobotToaster@mander.xyz 8 points 3 weeks ago

Should've made them out of tannerite

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 50 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Great, condition drivers to ignore children because "Mon dieu! Another one of those fakes!"

[–] Einskjaldi@lemmy.world 10 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

That's why you have to put real children in there randomly so it's a schrodinger paradox where you don't know if there's something living in there until you hit it.

[–] Triumph@fedia.io 4 points 3 weeks ago

No they need to make these imposters into lifelike robots that actually run out in traffic and cause accidents.

If you're lucky, nobody will see it and you can bury the robot in a shallow grave and pour electrolye on it to destroy the evidence.

Nah it's obvious the mannequin can't smoke.

[–] gedaliyah@lemmy.world 36 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Same in Korea, but it's actually effective:

[–] BennyInc@feddit.org 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah. Good luck running a red light with those placed at the intersection…

[–] Tiral@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

I mean, you can run it.... Once.

[–] Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world 17 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Dang. French kids are weird looking

[–] Salamanderwizard@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

The French are weird looking. (I'm jking)

[–] Seimhe@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago

A good traffic management plan acknowledges that when child predators slow down to look, it slows everyone else down too. /s

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago

What will happen is people will tune them out. And real children too.

[–] pasdechance@jlai.lu 6 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

I haven't seen one yet. Maybe they don't use them in every part of France?

i mean there only has to be one for this to technically be true

I've seen a few of them, in different regions i think, but definitely not in every town, and in my experience it's more of a rural village with a big road passing through thing.

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

In Oklahoma, people put deer statues by the highway for this effect.

[–] zarathustrad@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Works great, until people get so used to them that they ignore real children and deer.

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Yup! Although the deer don't get ignored for too long, a real one will be along soon enough to throw themselves across your hood.

Just increase the fines for going over the speed limit

[–] RobotToaster@mander.xyz 18 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] nexttech@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Interesting , why do you think that?

Because i was born in a wealthy family , and even my rich dad doesn't constantly accumulate fines jusst because he can afford to pay them!

[–] thebestaquaman@lemmy.world 13 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Because even though specifically your father chooses to follow the law, there is effectively no enforcement mechanism to prevent him from breaking it. It's not illegal for me to loudly announce the next stop on the bus, but I still abstain from doing it because I'm not an obnoxious asshole. Your father obeying the speed limit can be seen in the same way (plus, of course, that he may have a decent sense of self-preservation).

Fact is, if a rich person like your father is in a rush, they can choose to say "fuck it, I don't have time for this", and go speeding. Of course, anyone can do that, but the potential fine can be a strong deterrent for others, while having no influence on the rich. If you're caught and the fine is incurred, the punishment that can be debilitating for most people is a less than minor inconvenience for the rich.

[–] nexttech@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

Ah yes that is true . Your answer made me see things in another way , Thanks !

So can we consider putting a toy kid on the side of the road genuis?

[–] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 15 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Tie them to income or wealth instead.

[–] nexttech@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Tie what ? the kids ?

[–] Miaou@jlai.lu 1 points 3 weeks ago

What's the point when those are never enforced? Enforcement of trafic law is much more important than the concrete punishment. As you said yourself, being able to pay a fine does not mean you want to receive one.

That fake child is ugly. It would be wrong not to speed up.

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

That little fucker wants to get hit, you can tell.

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Waymos hate this one trick.

[–] Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

This is way stupider than tipping.

[–] Grimy@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Every muscle in my body would be screaming at me to swerve the car into that monstrosity. Imagine seeing it at night.
