No disc on PC is totally different because the platform is more free. We have multiple store fronts, some are DRM free, some come with free compatability tools, we can install games free of a store, back data up to a hard drive and play that same game on a different PC all offline, we could burn our entire library to SD cards or CDs and produce our own physical media, we can use a million combinations of hardware and operating systems, etc.
Locking out discs also hurts game stores and gives consumers worse value for money since they can't trade in games. Super shitty when there is only one digital storefront
It’s kinda what I’m getting at. To me it feels like the debate is really centered around the CD, the physical media. I wish it was more focused on the DRM side and the licensing. Sony doesn’t want you to own. Their method is the DRM and their new enforcement mechanism is to force the DRM through a digital only store.
Instead of pushing back in the digital aspect I wish we were pushing back more on the DRM aspect. I wish there was a way to resell a digital copy on a digital second hand market.
However, following this perspective the big casualty will be brick and mortar game stores. They need physical media to get people in the store to buy merch and other trinkets. I don’t really know what to think about that. I’m not super attached to those physical stores to start with.
That is not the point. Its the anti consumerism that Sony is practicing.
Steam library more game rental from Gabe imo.
Much like other media, ownership is not giving money to a proprietary app store for access they control.
Whatever you do, don't point out that all Steam games have DRM and licenses too and Valve can pull a Sony any time it wants.
Not necessarily. Developers choose whether or not to include the standard DRM.

At least Steam has not been deleting my games
Yet
I don't get why people salivate over game discs. It's going to be completely destroyed by DRM anyway. IMHO people should salivate over DRM-free video games instead. Because what's the point of "owning" an encrypted disk that refuses to install?
