Genuinely, thank you for the original. I see this edited into a meme so often, I couldn't even remember what the original was.
It's not just possible, it's the obvious choice. Google search has been shit for a long time.
I can recommend:
Ecosia - donates their profits to environmental causes
Startpage - private and if i recall EU based
Duckduckgo - private but american(?)
startpage is owned by an american company
i'd recommend qwant, it's the one i use. private and hosted in france
Kagi. Because it's a paid service, they aren't constantly looking for ways to sell their user base's time, attention and data to their real customers. You are the customer.
Don't want AI? Turn it off and you'll never see it again.

bonus: most of these (and some of the other suggestions on this thread, like SearXNG) protect your privacy better than Google does

Yep, it's switched off by default. I like to share this, because I can send it to non-techy people and they instantly have a working search engine, without fiddling with settings.
You don't need to turn it off each time you clear your cookies.
i use it because i use a browser extension that creates temporary throwaway containers replacing all "No Container" to keep site cookies isolated intelligently
SearXNG will not include AI overviews
SearXNG is the single best experience you can get for a search engine imo.
Except when only search result come from mwmbl and yacy because other are banned/captcha/tieout.
I find duckduckgo's results more useful/reliable and you absolutely can disable the ai.
If you change your location to France in the region settings (or vpn, I presume) it will turn off the default AI results. Worked for me.
You can already do this. Just append -ai to the end of the search
You can edit your browsers default Google search URL pattern to just always have -ai at the end.
You can also edit the search url to default to the web tab, which only shows link results

There must be a way because it no longer appears for me on my phone, but still pops up if I use another device I don't use much for browsing, like my PC. IDK how I managed to turn it off tho. Maybe it just got sick of me swearing at it.
