That image just measurably raised my blood pressure.

My first landlord gave me a plank to hold the door shut so he didn't have to repair the lock and another plank to put over the hole in the bathroom floor that you could fall through to the foundations.

'Safe' living.

[–] Return_of_Chippy@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Sounds like a resourceful person

[–] Sarothazrom@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

i genuinely hope that you're just really good at the bit, my dude

[–] bloogoose@lemmy.zip 106 points 3 days ago (3 children)

My landlord is a multibillion dollar corporation and my fridge is 32 years old.

[–] db2@lemmy.world 46 points 3 days ago (2 children)

If that fridge is still happily running then be happy, they literally don't make them like that anymore.

[–] bloogoose@lemmy.zip 23 points 3 days ago (2 children)

It leaks water on the floor, causes my power bill to go up and grows mildew around the seals weekly...

[–] EurekaStockade@lemmy.world 45 points 3 days ago

Good news, they do still make them like that!

[–] db2@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago (3 children)

It's low on refrigerant and effectively unfixable. Depending on where you're at you can probably withhold rent by putting it in an escrow account until the landlord fixes the problems. You have to tell them by certified mail, and if appliances aren't included in your rent agreement don't do it because you're already screwed. In that case get your own fridge and keep the receipt.

It's probably also super inefficient and uses Freon

Have you sincerely and cheerfully wished your multibillion dollar corporation landlord a happy and prosperous birthday, and have you gratefully and bravely remitted no less than three (3) months of your (useless to you) money?

No?

You’re what’s wrong with society.

[–] bloogoose@lemmy.zip 9 points 3 days ago

Truly I am a monster.

[–] Polisheocket@lemmy.zip 5 points 3 days ago

New fridges are a joke anyway. Mine broke after 5 years. I have a garage fridge better then my new one

My old landlord was a Vietnamese family who built an apartment complex for a family business instead of running a restaurant. I respected them, they kept the place in running order.

I feel like "landlord" is an easy group to hate, but some renters are absolutely filthy gross and I have seen what landlords sometimes deal with. No room for nuance here, of course, but how you do things matters a lot.

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 61 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (4 children)

Do NOT be kind to your landlord.

My landlord lost their house gambling so I offered them to rent one of my rooms at discount as a roommate.

Now whenever my rent increases due to cost of living, I increase their rent due to cost of living.

We are in a sick perpetual cycle and both our rents went up 5000% yesterday. We are comrades in this pain and promised to protect each other if liver selling operation goes wrong.

It's a hateful bond, an adversarial friendship, and a dying survival. Somebody please help!

[–] DisasterTransport@startrek.website 24 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I think that means you raised the GDP of your block by 500x. You two make a pretty good team! You should both get some kind of medal for driving such economic growth.

Edit: hang on a second, is your landlord Larry Ellison?

[–] derpgon@programming.dev 6 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Now that I think about it, if a circle exists somewhere where A rents to B, B rents to C, and C to A (make it as long as needed, of course), one increasing the rent leads to a perpetual rent increase until one of them collapses? Would be funny to see tbh.

[–] Fluke@feddit.uk 1 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

Well, imagine this, but A is also loaning the money to C to keep the circle going, and you've got the state of the "AI" market.

And people are yet still convinced "it's not a bubble".

[–] mildseason@sopuli.xyz 6 points 2 days ago

Lol spot on! This is exactly how the current economy is working 🙈

I didn't know until now that there is a debate about tipping your landlord. For me this sounds unbelievable. It's like tipping your politicians and policemen. Or in another way like tipping your mum.

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 days ago

like tipping your mum.

Widely believed to be impossible

[–] Cum_Rag@fedinsfw.app 19 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Being selfless is a burden?

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 19 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Only when you're selfish.

Come to think of it, if being selfless is a burden to you then you aren't really selfless.

[–] Cum_Rag@fedinsfw.app 4 points 2 days ago

I guess they don't see the sacrifices people make for their rent money

[–] Exatron@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That poor landlord is living from your paycheck to the next.

[–] Salamanderwizard@lemmy.world 46 points 3 days ago (4 children)

Our landlord wanted us to pay for the ac being fixed...during the hottest part of July.

You could be on fire in front of me, and I'd piss on you. Tell me you're a landlord and I'll need the first month and last month deposit first.

[–] Th4tGuyII@fedia.io 20 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Piss would be too good for them. I'd just get some marshmallows and sticks out

My last landlord put a clause in the lease that made me responsible for any sewer line repairs. I was like what the fuck is this? He said it was because tenants tend to flush shit you shouldn't flush and that's why sewer lines need to be replaced. To his credit (sort of) he took that out when I said no way I was signing. He was a member of that species of landlord that just puts whatever into leases because some people will sign anything.

The one thing he did that I liked which surprisingly does not seem common in rental leases was to require me to purchase and maintain renter's insurance. Not because he gave a shit about my stuff being stolen or lost in a fire (which renter's insurance covers) but because it's a source of coverage in the event of damage caused to the place by the renter. It was only like $15 a month so hardly a big deal.

[–] COASTER1921@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

Every apartment I've ever lived in requires renters insurance. It's so cheap that I'd argue it's a good idea to have regardless of whether required by the building. So many things are out of your control (floods, fire, weather damage, etc) and it's good to know that with the insurance you'd at least he able to get new stuff to maintain a similar living situation.

Landlords should really rebrand to something like building consurvitours.

[–] CaliforniaSober@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

Conservators
