Or:

  • Overnight dishwasher strikes a misaligned pan suddenly
  • Wind causes collar beam in roof to flex taught creating footstep sounds above
  • Toilet fan rattles against sudden negative pressure outside
  • Neighbour lets off firearm indoors
  • Chunk of render decides to break off and fall through the wall cavity

The vent fan in the bathroom.

Plot twist: It's actually someone who is extremely enthusiastic about toilets and they like to hang out around your house.

I'd still be worried about those last two...

One of those isn't the same as the other.

And makes it a purely American anecdote

Also happened in Slovakia.

One I had recently heard of happened in Čachtice in 2023.
48 year old ex police officer was cleaning a rifle, when it fired, shooting through a window, and killing a 30 year old mother who was in a kitchen of opposing building 120m (394ft) away.
Less than a month ago he received a 2 year prison sentence suspended for 3 years, and a ban on owning and using firearms for 8 years.

Used sources (in Slovak):
Markíza's eport from 2023
RTVS conviction report from 2026

Having gone to some Japanese and Korean stores, I think the same thing when I see their appliances. The rice cookers and refrigerators are super different. An example that we now all know about, the Japanese bidet.

Oh yeah, I remember seeing videos of world cup travelers being amazed by that this summer. I didn't realize it wasn't a normal thing!

It's slightly offset by the increased energy costs, as the fridge is way less efficient

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 hours ago

The fridge is less efficient when there is an ice maker? How? It sounds like you’re basically saying the freezer is always going to be less efficient when there’s something to freeze.

The people in the apartment above me keep moving in and out. Pisses me off, especially since they rearrange furniture in the middle of the night like they're practicing Feng Shui or something.

Nah, it's always the upstairs neighbor putting on clogs and moving furniture at 2 AM

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 9 points 2 hours ago

Universal truths are universal

It never fails to amaze me at just how much decision making power my unconscious self has. All manner of random household noises can happen and it will never wake me up, but the sound of a soft rainfall when I've left my windows open will wake me every time.

Laundry machine finishing and stove keeping same beep noise
