I think we can use this opportunity to rename these bodies of water after indigenous names. I've heard that some people in Mexico are now calling the Gulf Chalchiuhtlicueyecatl to celebrate their indigenous history. We should rename the lake to a name chosen by the Ojibwe
"Ontario" is already an indigenous word.

What's the difference between a (bad connotation) "colonial derivation" and a (neutral connotation) "transliteration?"
Remember, there was no native writing system and therefore no original orthographic form to be faithful to. "Ontario" and "Ontarí:io" are damn similar, so who's to say "Ontario" wasn't just a reasonable 17th Century transliteration from the time before diacritical marks were a thing?

Out of curiosity I just checked Google maps, hopoing they were just placating him. Nope still the thing I'm not going to ever call it.
In the UK, it still shows Gulf of Mexico, but with gulf of America in parentheses. Google needs to grow a pair.
