People are drinking water right from under the data centers!

[–] otter@lemmy.ca 19 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Looked at the article, and it starts off pretty stupid

While everyone else seems to be slugging H20 from 40-ounce Stanley tumblers, I have never understood the appeal of drinking plain, tasteless water all day.

Some people live in areas where the water tastes bad, but seeing the water as "boring" might mean that you're drinking too much of the other stuff (soda, juice, sugary etc). It's not that those other things are not hydrating, but they're unhealthy for other reasons.

The question feels more pressing than ever given rising temperatures, heat waves

I refuse to normalize a world where people lack access to clean drinking water. 😠

The rest of the article is pretty standard advice. There's no set amount of water that everyone needs to drink, and your diet/lifestyle/body composition/the weather will all play a role. Going based on thirst is a good indicator, but make sure you actually drink water when you're thirsty. !hydrohomies@lemmy.ml

But using that to justify unequal access to clean drinking water is a big no.

Except it's completely true - rare for WSJ, I know, but not completely unheard of. The weird hype around really unnecessarily excessive water intake is "Facebook Grandma Nutrition"-level bullshit. Healthy people have a reliable, fine-tuned mechanism for figuring out when water is needed: it's called being fucking thirsty

Sadly that is something many people can't rely upon. I am not that old, and have a tendency to get pretty dehydrated before i get thirsty at all. Old people are famous for getting so dehydrated that they get delirious - ask any nurse working in a hospital, they will agree that this is the case. With summer temperatures rising this will hit a lot more people of the already affected groups, and additional groups which are not sensitized yet towards that issue.

I agree that most people do not need to drink 3 liters of water per day. But what happens is that people aim for that amount and then land somewhere around 1.5-2 liters / day, which is a pretty good amount for normal days, and they will be more alert towards their water intake on hot days, which prevents deaths.

1.2 L is cleary not in the realm of "unnecessarily excessive water intake" though.

Sure. And a huge amount of different health stuff can mess with it. But the whole "watermaxxing" thing where people lug around enough water for literal days, idk. Seems like basically a fashion accessory for people who'd like a zero effort way to do something that looks all healthy and whatnot

I ditched my 40oz bottle for a 64oz bottle. The fuck is this journalism.

The article seems to be a list of ~~products you can buy~~ things you can drink to get your daily hydration that aren't boring old water.

Bezos really needs the water for his data centers. Come on guys, don’t be a dick and just dehydrate yourself and shower for 10 seconds max and we can have all the data centers Jeff wants!

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 7 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

You need around 2 litres a day

Bezos wants your water for himself

Edit: this is WSJ not WaPo

Wall Street* wants your water for themselves

[–] raman_klogius@ani.social 29 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Bezos (owner of WSJ) is famous for hating his employees's basic biological needs.

As @9point6@lemmy.world pointed out, Bezos is the owner of WaPo, not WSJ, and thus, the Wall Street wants our water, not Bezos alone.

2027: β€œDo you really need three meals a day?”

[–] SmoothOperator@lemmy.world 6 points 2 hours ago

To be fair, if you ask a doctor there is not much reason for drinking water beyond when you're thirsty.

[–] ArgentRaven@lemmy.world 23 points 3 hours ago

Do not my friends, become addicted to water! It will take hold of you, and you will resent its absence!

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 48 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Lol, 1 liter is nothing. But yeah okay, it could be a liter of water for the poor thirsty AI data centres.

[–] justsomeguy@lemmy.world 7 points 3 hours ago

journalist drinking 6 pumpkincinnamoncock flavoured chaimoccalattuccinos for 18 bucks each to then sit down and tell people they don't need a whole liter of water

[–] RockBottom@feddit.org 5 points 2 hours ago

Or they want to sell more plastic per ounce.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 25 points 4 hours ago

I only have near a bottle of water if I am at work at 30Β°C or more. But maybe it's because I'm Spanish.
