MODERATORS

While speaking on the final night of the GOP midterm convention, Vice President JD Vance said the country was “poorer” and “dirtier” before President Donald Trump was reelected for a second term.

“We were tired of being called racists for noticing that our country was becoming dirtier and poorer, and less safe and less prosperous,” Vance said on the final day of the two-day convention in Dallas, Texas.

His sentiment appeared to reflect the administration’s efforts to combat rising immigration rates in the U.S., a key campaign point during the 2024 election. Vance himself promoted unsubstantiated claims about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, in September 2024, spreading misinformation about the community abducting and eating pets.

The billionaires are the only group of "welfare queens" making the world a dirtier place.

Ah perpetual victimhood

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 29 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Nobody has made America dirtier or poorer than MAGA has.

[–] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

American workers have been getting poorer since the 1970s.

Every President, bOtH pArTiEs, American workers are poorer.

Poland now has better benefits for their people, with benefits that most Americans will never see (and they're paid almost as much, with less taxation, on a smaller budget).

Family leave (41 weeks!). Vacation time (20 days!!!). Universal healthcare. Sick leave. "Occasional" leave, for the love of God. Sounds nice.

I guess their labor party can do so much more with so much less, for some reason.

JD Vance: "Am I racist for wanting those filthy dirty Haitians to take a shower and go back to their country?"

The Turd Reich

[–] blitzen@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Whether or not America was "dirtier and poorer" before Trump is immaterial here. Ascribing that to immigrants and people who look like immigrants is racist.

I'm sure they are tired of being called racist, but that doesn't mean it's not true.

[–] 7101334@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (8 children)

It also wasn't "less safe", violent crime has been dropping for quite a while in most areas

Also, not to engage with the point too much, but what do they think of Muslim immigrants? Ethnically speaking, people from that culture is particularly strict on cleanliness.

[–] blitzen@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago

When they say dirty, they don’t actually mean hygiene. They mean melatonin.

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 day ago

I mean I know what they think of them, sigh, I don't know who I pretend there's even a kernel of a good faith argument here

The U.S. has become safer and safer every decade since the 90s. It didn't matter who was president...always safer.

"Poorer and dirtier" says guy proud to claim that he was raised as white trash.

source: was also raised white trash, but did manage to develop class consciousness.

[–] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago (2 children)

says guy proud to claim that he was raised as white trash

Guy who was actually not raised as "white trash", and who has been lying and changing his tune constantly throughout his public life.

It is getting dirtier and poorer, and all the guys responsible sat pride-of-place at the inauguration.

Translation: Republicans are tired of being called racist for being racist.

"We are tired of being called racists for noticing America is getting dirty. Call us racist because we view people who are different than us as inherently lesser."

[–] deathmetaldawgy@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (6 children)

I mean, not to get too deep into the weeds here but it seems like he’s literally saying dirtier because of the people in it, not like trash dirtier. It’s not even a misdirect on the phrase it’s a straight up dogwhitsle calling poor people dirty and equating that to non-white people. Your analysis is pretty spot on but more specifically “ Call us racist because we view people who are different than us as inherently dirtier. “ which is straight out of hitlers handbook. Almost like Trump has said handbook nearby, at the ready, like at his bedside table or something…

[–] Doomsider@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Totally agree, thinly veiled racism is this administration's calling card.

[–] deathmetaldawgy@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That’s what I’m saying tho it’s not thin. It’s not barely even a dog whistle but we’ve pulled that window so far right that saying America is dirty (not trash, but literally the people) is just blatant racism. And you got some guy in here saying it’s paranoia. Ha

In the past year, I've been called racist, commie, Trumper, Nazi, transphobic, tankie, fascist, fundamentalist, sexist, and Satanist.

Buck up Vance, you little bitch

"If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people, then that's what I'm going to do."

JD Vance on why it's ok to lie about immigrants if it makes his base like him more. There is no comeuppance great enough for what they're doing, and he knows it. A lot of the base may be too brainwashed, but he can see that he is ruining the country and he not only doesn't care but is reveling in it.

This isn't why they were called racists. They were called racists for claiming that Barack Obama wasn't American, for trying to build a wall to keep out Central and South Americans, and for banning immigration from countries where most people are Muslim.

The origins of the pet eating accusation is some woman complaining her cat was missing and accusing their neighbour of eating it. The cat came back the very next day.

This is so funny because to the people he's pandering to, his children are the dirt in this country.

[–] RyanDownyJr@lemmy.world 67 points 2 days ago (16 children)

It's baffling to me that he is in an interracial marriage and is... Fine? With saying this kind of stuff? Idk maybe she is a monster too and it's just cherry picking what is considered bad in their moral compass...

[–] Kirp123@lemmy.world 99 points 2 days ago (4 children)

She must be a monster, she married JD Vance.

A few days ago Vance also got really riled up when discussing this kinda stuff. He said something about El Sayed not being the kinda person his hick granpappy would approve of and El Sayed shot back asking if the hick granpappy would approve of his wife. It really set him off, going on about how El Sayed shouldn't bring Vance's family into this. It was kinda funny to watch him squirm.

JD Vance is nothing. He's not evil or stupid or whatever like the other MAGA people. He' just a guy that nobody likes.

[–] _wizard@lemmy.world 48 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Wait, sounds like Vance brought his family into the convo first. The mental gymnastics these sad sacks of shit perform boggles me.
