what is the thing with DNS? why is it 2 thin slabs?

[–] pHr34kY@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

DNS is held up by a surprisingly small number of root servers. Their physical locations are not disclosed.

[–] stardreamer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 23 hours ago

No what? The geographical locations for all 13 root " servers" and who manages them are well known (the only problem is the US is in charge of all of them). The actual number of physical servers is significantly greater. Actual requests are serviced using IP Anycast and can scale significantly better than connection-oriented services.

Misconfiguration is the bigger issue. Dnssec is not easy to get right, while caching makes things harder to fix immediately.

Replace AI with advertising.

[–] MaggiWuerze@feddit.org 2 points 8 hours ago

Advertising is more akin to a piece of the foundation that grew an arm and started swatting at itself and other parts of the structure

Seems like we could at least get rid of the sharks.

[–] MaggiWuerze@feddit.org 2 points 8 hours ago

We're working on it

[–] UiUiUiUiUi@piefed.nl 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Sharks are great for a fully functioning ecosystem, Cloudflare on the other hand is more like Jellyfish.

People wouldn't use it if it didn't work. It has its own downtimes but that's nothing compared to how a DDoS attack from a bored skiddie might take you down.

Hey @cloudflare, how come you’re protecting beamed.st, the DDoS service that’s attacking Ubuntu?

https://www.webpronews.com/cloudflares-dual-role-in-the-ubuntu-ddos-crisis-protection-or-pressure/

It’s a protection racket don’t fall for it.

Ticks that can breathe underwater.

[–] Womble@piefed.world 1 points 1 day ago

The "sharks" are actually Russian submarines.

[–] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 11 points 1 day ago

Oh yeah great, let them harden their fucking monopoly of the net even more. I'm tired boss.

They made a large chunk of the internet inaccessible without javascript.

My main beef these days is they are aggressively pushing "are you a robot" at VPN users.

But then, I don't think they are to blame, more likely stupid AI shit traffic increasing.

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Not just VPN users. I don't use VPN and the massive uptick in the past year or so is quite irritating.

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

That happens because of nefarious people using VPNs.

Anubis is doing the same thing. Most Lemmy/PieFed instances have it.

That’s a nice website you got there. Shame if something happened to it.

Cloudflare is a protection racket.

[–] Jyek@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That implies cloud flare will take your website down for not paying them.

Cloudflare protects all the ddos services and malicious actors

[–] Lauchmelder@feddit.org 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

do you have any sources to back that up or are you just making this up

[–] rob_t_firefly@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

"Quantum-Safe" means that whatever mistakes happen with these TLS certificates, a kind-hearted time traveler will zap into our bodies to fix them for us.

To more securely encrypt the ... user tracking?
