I would prefer them back too, but i have the suspicion that american exceptionalism will not cope well with being shunned and marked as untrustworthy backstabbers by the rest of the world.

I think it’s just their way of getting rid of anyone that would say no to illegal orders, ie not doing a coup to keep Repugs in power, or attacking US citizens.
Conveniently, it also sends the message that the rest of us are bad or lesser than.
These two points work together to stop progressives from gaining any ground and putting down the inevitable rebellion.
