You know that there's no real rules about food, you can eat whatever you want with whatever you want, you can make a cheese and mayo sandwich using weetbix as the bread if you want.
Your stomach will tell you when you've fucked up.

Nobody's saying it's against the rules. But certain rules are just unwritten because it's gross. It's not like the pasta alone is an insufficient portion anyway.
As a person of Pacific Islander descent, rice is awesome and goes with everything.
Also if you're on a budget rice is a cheap way to fill your stomach.
Rice and vermicelli is rice and pasta, and it’s wildly common, especially the cheap bagged side dish stuff.

That... doesn't seem bad? No one would mind if he also put some vegetables in there and called it a pasta salad.
Hoenstly just add some green peas, a little black pepper and that would sound pretty good to me!

Pasta with cheese and mayonnaise seems like it could be alright. Rice is the weird one here imo
Wouldn’t that be added when the pasta is cold? I get the feeling OOP did this with hot pasta, possibly even heating the mayonnaise to make it more “like” Alfredo sauce.
Does no one know how to make a roux? If you already had the cheese, I'm sure you had maybe some butter or oil on hand and some flour.
Butter or oil sure. You might be surprised how many people do not keep flour handy.

Flour and butter are certainly cheaper than mayo
Don't even need flour for Alfredo. Its just parm, butter, heavy cream (or milk) and the drippings from the meat part (usually chicken). If not, add a splash of chicken stock.

Mayonnaise is mostly oil and egg, which is kind of more akin to carbonara than Alfredo. That said, it has a sourness that isn't going to mesh the same way-- basically, vinegar and/or lemon juice, which one generally wouldn't want much of (if at all) in something meant to be creamy. Main reason I don't particularly like it as a butter substitute in grilled cheese.
Knowing what goes into things like mayo, ketchup, Sriracha, etc, can work well when you're in a pinch, though. It's just harder to control the ratio of sugars, salts, and sour components so you have to offset that elsewhere.
I mean... so a hot pasta salad?
This is basically a war crime.
I've been in between paychecks and eaten worse than that.
I'm a terrible cook personally, but my wife is fantastic at this stuff. Just FYI, you want a delicious cheese sauce, all you need is some milk or half & half, butter, and cheese. If you want it thicker, use less milk, or add a bit of cream cheese. Heat at a simmer and keep warm.
If you let it cool, it will firm up some and makes for a good cracker dip.
