Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

So he hates us white cis men and wants to persecute us?! Is that what he's saying?! Why is he being so hateful and intolerant? I'm never watching anything with him in it ever again!

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You seemed to have forgotten your /s if you're not intending this to reveal some inner dumbass

[–] Slovene85@sh.itjust.works 22 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I thought it was obvious enough to not need it.

In the times where the administration calls these people "very fine people"?

I AM Shirley. ... And don't call me serious!

It was a white supremacist rally known as Unite the Right, and djt1.0 said they were very fine people after a white supremacist killed a counter protestor by ramming his car into the counter protest the day after that picture above. Incidentally, they chanted that "The Jews will not replace us!" in that rally.

The jackass was re-elected, and the klan lurks on the internet. So, a good rule when reading text is to take what is written as the author's intent. If sarcasm is intended, a "/s" is required.

You don't have to "be a fan" in order to support someone's right to exist.

I have a cousin who is transphobic in the sense that he is very uncomfortable around trans people. He cannot get past it and avoids interactions because he's so uncomfortable. He also defends trans rights at every turn, publicly and without hesitation. Trans rights are human rights. Full stop.

[–] StabbingSky@lemmy.zip 42 points 1 day ago

Yeah, the trans issue really isn't on my personal pressing issue radar, but I'll do what I can to shut any trans hate down when I witness it.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I feel a bit similar with nonbinariness. Not uncomfortable but maybe unconvinced. But fucking hell, it's not something worth hating anyone over. And like most things that I'm unconvinced by, it won't prevent me from treating anyone politely. You've got to be a certain kind of fucked to let it get to you to that level, or worse, to whip up that kind of sentiment in others

[–] buffing_lecturer@leminal.space 12 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

I appreciate what you're saying. It'd be great if more people were discerning with their placement of hate and understanding of how it propagates.

I do wonder if being 'convinced' is really all that important?

Personally, I think it's sort of beside the point (which I think is exactly what you're saying).

I guess what I'm wondering is: can we ever expect to be 'convinced' of every true experience? I think for me to be unabashedly 'convinced' of anything, I'd have to be able to identify with it personally. In a "I think therefore I am" sort of way. Your experience is the only one you know exists for sure yea?

Yet, I am consistently surprised as to the complexity of feelings when they become a reality for me. My takeaway is that I can't hope to have true understanding of how any other person feels.

I can imagine what it's like to lose a loved one, a pet, a job. I might judge someone based on their emotional response to an event. But, when it happens to me, I suddenly get it.

I get how much I could never 'get' before.

It is like adding a whole other dimension, a new axis, to my world. Think how a 3rd demensional object just just never be expressed in a 2d world. It's like adding a new cone to your eye, or waking up and having the nose of a dog. There is just unfathomable complexity in the world, and we each take in just an extremely small portion of it at a time. New experiences, for me anyway, can often feel so novel in a 'wow I was just so naive' sort of way.

I just can't trust my understanding of the complexity of human experience enough to think that I even have the capacity to imagine all of them.

How could someone who has never tried chocolate, really get what it tastes like? They just don't, and can't, not unless they actually experience it for themselves. And even then, no two experiences are quite the same; one person loves candy corn, the other hates it. Entirely different experience of taste, with the same stimuli.

All that is to say, I think that we are in agreement that whether or not we are "convinced" of any one reality, it's really not the point. We just have to be convinced that our reality isn't the only one.

We are all different! We will never get it all! But hopefully we can get that other people have different feelings than us, and that causing other people pain sucks!

So, be tolerant.

There are right wingers going around saying he was talking about abortion and not trans people.

They want so badly to be culturally relevant

The masses need to wake up and realize that the things being denied to us are just a test run for things that will be denied them as well in due time.

[–] Flukeyfox@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yep... It should be no surprise to anyone that the US-based far-right Christian group "ADF" has been pumping in £millions into the UK to fund anti-trans and anti-abortion lobbying and court cases (including the Supreme Court ruling on trans rights)... And have also been pumping money into UK law, and recently into the far-right Reform party who have argued against our current abortion rights laws (and Farage also previously having spoken with disdain on gay rights 🙄). Gotta love foreign interference in our politics, and in broad daylight.

The ADF was also the group responsible for the overturning of Roe V Wade and removing women's constitutional right to abortion in the US... Go figure

More people need to be aware that the same people pushing for more and more restrictive laws on trans people, aren't even hiding their motive to do the same for women as a whole - in fact they've already been doing so.

It's easier to convince the public to remove a large group of people's rights, once you've already set the precedent that it's okay to take rights away from a different group. That's why they first target the smaller more vulnerable group that's has significantly less, if no voice in politics.

Trans rights are also deeply rooted in rights to Bodily Autonomy as deeply recognised by Women's rights law organisations

It's just sad that some women don't realise they're attacking the exact people who would be standing by their side when their rights are being threatened...

I'm still going to continue being vocal about women's rights, especially when they start properly going after abortion rights... I just wish it was mutual :/

My partner was saying how it seems like most men cant look at a woman without also thinking about sex with them.

Idk how true that is but it might explain some of the anger towards trans women. Since men cant just think about them, men also have to think about having sex with them, and since so many men are extremely homophobic and dont consider trans women to be women, that would make them gay. And being being considered gay is worse than anything else in the world.

TL:DR Most men cant help but think about bangin' trans women and they think that makes them gay. Which is a fate worse than death for them.

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't know how other men are but generally when I see someone (of any genre) there's like an automatic evaluation - not in words or conscious - that flags like "are they a threat? Are they hot?" and a bunch of other stuff. It's just part of the "what am I looking at?" reflex in the brain.

But I don't, like, linger on it. Don't play out in my head what sex would be like, or how to defend myself if they pulled a knife, or whatever.

To make a computer metaphor, some attributes are eagerly loaded and others lazily. I think attractiveness is eagerly loaded.

Also I'm comfortable enough not to feel threatened by finding people attractive.

I had a friend that, when talking about this, seemed like their brain didn't eagerly load the same things. They didn't "know" if someone was hot until they thought about it, and were confused how that information was just there for me.

[–] Juniper@piefed.zip 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My brain operates only on "are they a threat", and within that is "are they a friend". I can name only a handful of people I find attractive if I'm pressed, but it's always on a "this human is art" level.

I'm aroace, though, which likely is why I don't evaluate people for hotness

Aromantic asexual, not feeling / feeling little romantic and sexual arraction towards other people.

[–] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago

Huh, makes sense. Thanks for explaining

[–] Soup@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

My other theory is that these people base their whole lives on conformity. The second they see people doing things outside the norm, and which bring them some semblance of joy, they get pissed off knowing that they are too weak to break out of the mold and be happy, too.

In reality, it’s a combination of many of these kinds of things. A LOT of anger often comes from sadness, and boy do these people hate letting themselves be happy.

[–] DamienGramatacus@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

You might be on to something there. The frustration of cognitive dissonance can manifest as anger if people don't know how to process it.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 4 points 1 day ago

My partner was saying how it seems like most men cant look at a woman without also thinking about sex with them.

As a man I feel that way sometimes, sex is always on my mind. But like, if I look at a woman I'm not attracted to I just ... don't want to have sex with them. They're still a person who I can have platonic interactions with. Same for the vast majority of women who I would like to have sex with who don't feel the same way about me. I think this is the part the misogynist/transphobic dudes struggle with, they can't get over themselves. For me the sexual thoughts are more often annoying than anything else and they're only one part of the "whole" that I think about women.

"Many such cases"

[–] likebudda@reddthat.com 8 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I can't imagine what it's like to be trans but I can imagine what it's like to be part of a small, persecuted minority. They're not asking for much, quite frankly nothing at all that affects me directly, so I'm feeling especially generous. I've never been to a trans story hour but you know who you don't want reading to kids? My boring ass.

[–] ImperialATAT@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

You're cool. But I do know who I don't want reading to my kids… anyone in the Epstein files.

They think it makes them look strong

[–] Zink@programming.dev 4 points 1 day ago

Even if they don't care about looking strong, they also define themselves by the things they hate, and they get genuine pleasure from punching down.

You know, like a bad person!

Granted, the latter but about punching down is probably from the same inadequate corner of their brain as the "look strong" stuff.
