This is a wild situation because this is exactly the kind of attack ad I would expect a republican to be running against a dem anywhere else.

I'm so excited for Mississippi

It's going to be really difficult to make any meaningful dent in climate change without alt-meat, but states like Mississippi have preemptively banned cultured meat, and right now many alt-meats perversely cost more.

The average voter in Mississippi is not going to be swayed by the issue of climate change, but will be swayed by excessive inflation on groceries fueled by unchecked consolidation and price fixing in the meatpacking industry.

The Republican solution of 'letting the free market decide' by consumers switching to substitute products if price rises and new market entrants motivated by increased profits to disrupt incumbents doesn't work given that demand for beef is relatively inelastic and it is difficult for smaller meatpacking companies to effectively compete in that market.

Well that and the "let them eat cake" attitude, is uh.., well lets just say there is historical precedent for this particular rhetorical flourish uh.. not going so well.

I'm reading the excellent book Meat at the moment. The author is themselves vegan or vegetarian, but they fully realize that getting everyone to adopt that diet is not going to happen.

He acknowledges that as a species, humans loooove their meat and the demand is not likely to go down. And so the problem statement basically is - given that our current eating habits are one of the largest causes of climate change - what do we do about it?

I just note that this state has already closed off one of the main options before it's even arrived. I don't know what that option may do in the economic sphere in the future - right now culture meat is wildly expensive, and I have no idea if it can realistically scale to the point where it's as cheap as or cheaper than conventional.

Chickpeas and lentils are wonderful proteins and still relatively affordable.

You can also make your own Beyond alternatives for a third the cost of buying the premade alt meat brands, and they freeze well.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

True. I'm vegetarian, so I don't eat beef. Sometimes, I will have some alt meats. Cultured meat is still not available for purchase anywhere, AFAIK.

For most of what we make at home, we eat cheaper - and better - than we did before going vegetarian. Most meals are fully vegan.

People have this view that vegan is some elitist thing for the latte liberals, but if you cook yourself, it can be way, way cheaper.

But when it comes to moving the needle on climate change....getting everyone to adopt vegan/vegetarianism, or even just curtail their massive intake of meat - is just not all that likely to happen.

Like, you want to be a little annoyed at the vulgar populism of "You deserve to buy more burger". But it's hard in a state that's run by folks who are effectively trying to price gouge the price of beef, then blame people who flinch at the price

[–] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago

Youʻre also going up against a practical firewall of decades of pro-beef propaganda. And your opponent just made the critical error.

Also, there is a nod acknowledging that the sentiment isn't only for beef-eaters. One of the main speakers is eating fish, and another main speaker is buying dairy.

Sure. But it was good politics to attack them this way.

Its a good ad.
