In an interview hosted by Politico, the California governor said the US must ‘wake up’ to the the threat posed by the president’s disregard of democratic norms

Donald Trump is gravely serious about running for a third term in violation of the US constitution, California governor Gavin Newsom said on Wednesday, warning Americans to “wake up” to what he described as the president’s flagrant disregard for democratic norms.

“I don’t think Donald Trump wants another election,” Newsom, a Democrat, said during a live interview at a summit hosted by Politico in Sacramento. “This guy doesn’t believe in free, fair elections.”

Newsom, who has gained national attention in recent weeks for his merciless trolling of Trump online and who is widely considered a presidential contender, said he had a stack of two dozen “Trump 2028” hats sent to him by the president’s supporters.

Let's be honest. He'll just declare a "national emergency" and suspend elections, no third term necessary. He's trying it out in DC and LA now. It's all in the dictator playbook.

mortality is the only thing that will get him out of office at this point. sadly he has the best medical care this country has to offer. thankfully he has the best medical care this country has to offer.

[–] Chainweasel@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

He also eats like shit, doesn't exercise at all, has a stimulant addiction, and his age is catching up with him.
Even if by some miracle he makes it to the end of this term, he won't last for a 3rd term.
After that the real fun starts when there's a struggle to fill the power vacuum, that could cause an actual civil war.

Time for an American Year of Four Emperors

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Does he really have the best care? Be honest if you were a doc and Trump gets rolled in are you going to be particularly good to him, sure you may follow the Hippocratic oath but there's nothing saying you can't go full WW1 combat medic and make the healing as physically painful as possible.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I’m sure plenty of doctors are republicans.

Yeah but most Republicans don't have to be up close to his body, let alone touch it. Can you imagine how greasy his skin is?

[–] assembly@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Just follow the guidelines of the RFK HHS and that could be enough.

[–] WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

Perfect. He'll be dead in 6-12 months.

For real though, RFK's appointment was to intentionally kill and harm as many poors as possible. Christian fascists are among the most psychopathic psychology that can exist.

He has ACCESS to the best medical care, but he'll demand a MAGA doctor, which means he'll probably get some mental defective like Ben Carson, or some quack RFK Mengele will recommend.

He is not leaving power willingly.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 5 points 1 week ago

We shall indulge him.

[–] peoplebeproblems@midwest.social 8 points 1 week ago (9 children)

Which is odd. I don't understand how he would suspend elections, as the states run those. So, essentially if some states refuse to have an election, and the rest do, then he loses.

Obviously he wouldn't accept that, but the voting states will likely form the Union again, Ally with the rest of the world and crush the every loving shit of the Christian Nationalist movement once and for all.

Maybe we let them keep Florida though. Just the cock part, and have a massive DMZ across it.

Hopefully his heart disease is serious about preventing him.

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I'm hoping it happens on labor day. Its a positive for workers and we have the day off yo celebrate.

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

@Kühlschrank@lemmy.world @BassTurd@lemmy.world

Rumor is that it might be happening :0

[–] BassTurd@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

If we could roll that back to Friday so we have a full 3 day weekend to celebrate (also because the sooner the better, but also the partying) that would be swell.

[–] makyo@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

I'm going to need more than a day to celebrate

[–] Sunflier@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'd rather it be a guillotine.

If Trump is still alive come the next election season I guaran-fucking-tee he will try to run for president again.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 13 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Really wish he would just become unalive right fucking now.

[–] MourningDove@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago

Every day I wake up hoping that’ll be the big news story.

Oh he is not leaving power willingly. Not at all. He’ll either get SCOTUS to say people are not allowed to serve three consecutive terms (which would also mean he implicitly acknowledges that he lost 2020) but 3 non-consecutive terms are a-ok OR he starts an internal or external war and claims a national emergency to remain in office.

I’m betting on #2.

[–] HulkSmashBurgers@reddthat.com 1 points 5 days ago

Yeah lots of shenanigans he can pull.

[–] TonyOstrich@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Kissinger lived to be 100 years old. Unfortunately I think this shit bag will be around for quite a while.

[–] HulkSmashBurgers@reddthat.com 1 points 5 days ago

Yeah probably but hopefully the hamberders do their thing.

[–] Steve@startrek.website 25 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Third term my ass, he plans to be dictator for life. “Term” implies some sort of permission to be there.

I mean, they're probably the same thing. Dude's almost 80. Honestly I think it's charitably 50/50 he even makes it to next election season (or whatever hot mess it ends up being), he looks like hammered shit.

[–] No1@aussie.zone 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Term also implies there is an election lol

Even North Korea pretends to have elections. The dividing line between dictatorship and democracy is if the elections are free and fair.

"democratic norms"? That's a law. Not just any law, it's a literal amendment of the literal Constitution.

[–] Catma@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Great whose enforcing those amendments? The Supreme Court? Who said he can do whatever? Congress who has rolled over and not pushed back in the least?

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Hey now, Cory Booker did that thing where he stood in one place and talked all day, and Schumer wrote a VERY stern letter.

[–] FluorideMind@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (19 children)

Hopefully we the people enforce the Constitution.

Yeah, the writing has been on the wall for a while. He won't be leaving office until he's dead.

[–] Deflated0ne@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago (2 children)

He can be as serious as he wants. He won't live to run again.

That One Big Beautiful Obituary is coming. And soon.

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago

Strom Thurmond lived to be 101. He was in in congress from 1956 to 2003. We can all hope for the Big Beautiful Obituary, but only the good seem to die young.

[–] Fredthefishlord@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 week ago (2 children)

And nor will that be the end of our struggles

[–] Deflated0ne@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Not even the beginning of the end.

We'll go from his incompetent bumbling to professional fascists running things. And that shit is going to be a nightmare.

I am 100% serious when I say I really think the best case scenario is economic collapse and balkanization. I truly believe that's how we get out with the least amount of blood spilled.

Spades are broke. Our systems. Our guardrails. They've all failed or been purposefully exploited and compromised. The Heritage Foundation has spent 2 generations finding every chink in the armor of our govt they can in order to exploit it. There's no fixing it. There's no going back to normal. Can't put the toothpaste back in the tube.

That is STUPID! The Constitution CLEARLY states a President Only gets TWO TERMS just like it CLEARLY STATES that School Shooters are OK!

[–] CircaV@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

The SCOTUS has awarded him personally absolute power. Full stop. If Trunp decides to stay on he’ll do an executive order and say it has to be you can’t run for three consecutive terms (which would be hilarious cause it implicitly admits he lost 2020) OR he will start an internal or external war and just stay on citing an emergency. It is crystal clear. He is not leaving office except by dying.

Trump has been looking pretty shit lately, more than he usually does. And has been talking about getting into heaven. I don't think he gets to 2028. Though I guess they could try some Weekend at Bernie's shit with him, wouldn't really put it past the current people around him.

[–] Envy@fedia.io 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Weekend at Bernie's? They will put his corpse on a golden throne and run enough currents through his body to pretend to have a pulse, and worship the god emperor regardless

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 9 points 1 week ago (3 children)

No, that a bright red line. He is NOT eligible for a third term under ANY circumstances. If they do engineer it so he has a third term, then American Democracy is dead, and I have no obligation to follow any laws, pay taxes, etc. It's Robin Hood Economics, and I'm heading to the nice neighborhoods.

[–] violetsoftness@piefed.blahaj.zone 11 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I remember when roe v wade was supposed to be a line
