The other bodies of water in this picture are what interest me. Both the Pond and the Tidal Basin look bluer, showing what it would have looked like. Now it's the color of grift.
They're probably also deeper, which both provides a less ideal environment for algae to grow and also looks bluer despite algae that might be growing. The water in the tidal basin is also moving and has water naturally flowing in and out. The reflecting pool does not have that and needs to be shallow so that water movement is minimized to create the reflection it's supposed to give.
Yes the Basin is more "wild," fair enough.
The Pond is also shallow and manmade, with a similar water system, so it's a truer comparison.
I'm not sure if it changed, but the reflecting pool was modified to be fed by the tidal basin during Obama's presidency.
