- Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
- No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

AOC can definitely do the job. I don't think there's any questions there. Her presidential run is a given long term. But running in 2028 is very much a last ditch effort to save democracy and I hope Americans understand that.
The root problem is American apathy. While AOC might be a solution to that, the concern I have is how big of a target a presidential run puts on her. AOC in many ways is the political successor of Bernie Sanders. We're all expecting his passing before 2040. If the GOP/ETC target AOC, and she falls, who will lead in her stead?
What worries me (as a non-american) is that if American's don't unify the movement will die with her.
There are others capable of taking up the reins, such as Mamdani. The movement won't die, but potentially might be a bit rudderless for a bit as it figures out how to regroup & try again.
Unfortunately, the subset of Americans who actually understand what's at stake still seems to be smaller than we'd like. Fortunately, enough of the other side had started becoming disillusioned enough with Cheeto Messiah that they will at least not be so much of an obstacle.
People say she doesn't have enough experience but then chime in ."mamdani who is first time mayor of a few months should run for president".
Double standard there.
Not saying you specifically said that about her. But that's what so many say.
She actually has plenty of experience in politics. She's been in politics for many years and when she's asking or answering questions, it's clear she's educated and informed.
I think new York needs mamdani.
Sorry to put it this way, but as an outsider looking in... I don't think you even get it; and you're clearly an informed, smart person. I'm sorry this is going to probably come off as insulting despite my desire for it not to be.
For instance you bring up Mamdani like he's just one of many potential candidates on the sideline and not literally the only candidate since Bernie & AOC. That's alarming to me considering how long it takes for someone to achieve national name recognition.
"Rudderless" is exactly the word I would use to describe the movement currently.

I'm not trying to be a pessimist but I do think progressives are being placated with casual optimism. The clock for America is running out. I genuinely think 2028 will be the last "United States" federal election, regardless of the outcome.
AOC could very well win the 2028 presidency, but I guarantee there will not be a peaceful transfer of power.
Here's hoping these mid term elections shift things for the better.

For its very short existence, the breakaway genocidal settler colony of the genocidal globe spanning European empire has been at war for all but a dozen years, and more than half of those were during the most brutal chattel slavery project on the planet and all of them were during the total genocide and erasure campaign against the native inhabitants of the land they occupy.

It all matters for 2028. Because in case you didn't notice, every time a D has won the presidency, the same baby killing machine keeps on grinding along without any issues. Obama/Biden appointed Tom Homan to run DHS/ICE while they reorg'd it so it became possible to deploy into major urban areas. Obama deported 3M people. Trump made Homan his deportation czar in both terms, using the framework that Obama/Biden put in place for him. And Biden knew all of that and changed literally nothing about the policy structure of DHS/ICE while he was in office.
Bush2 admin selected a bunch of countries to topple. 2 of them were Libya and Syria. Obama/Clinton did Libya, and they devastated that place and now it hosts open-air slave markets. Biden/Harris finished did Syria, and the new president of Syria they put in place was a terrorist with a bounty on his head. He was literally decapitating people and Biden/Harris dropped the bounty and made him president of Syria.
Corporations make more profits under Democrats.
Racialized mass incarceration is bi-partisan.
Occupation of colonized lands is bi-partisan.
Mass murder through sanctions of over 800k people each year is bi-partisan.
Global war mongering is bi-partisan.
Ecocide is bi-partisan.
Protecting capitalism is bi-partisan.
This is not solved by voting. It's not solved by primaries. It's solved the same way women got the right to vote, the same way black people got civil rights protections, and the same way labor unions got weekends and sick days.
That comment is 100% correct while also contributing absolutely nothing of value.
