AOC must run for president. If she doesn’t, she is leaving significant gains on the table. Not gains for her; gains for the movement, for the working class, for progress, and for the world.

No clue why I haven't blocked .ml entirely.

Maybe they make me feel better about myself? /s

Hahahaha. At first I thought I wonder how old this screenshot must be and then I scrolled further in the comments. Again hahahahahahahhahahaha.

That's not a duality, both accounts are radical centrists.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 6 points 56 minutes ago (1 children)

Lmao, what exactly is a "radical centrist?" It sounds like the beginning of a skit.

[–] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 1 points 46 minutes ago (1 children)

There's apparently actually an organized (but dubious) political philosophy in multiparty democracies, but I was using it (perhaps incorrectly) to refer to out and proud centrists eager to fight the good fight in service of the belief that actually nothing can change and the establishment is doing great.

Those are trolls.

Try not to fuck up again again America... But you probably will because the election will be rigged in the favour of the pedo corpo cartel.

Waiting for the "But a progressive/woman can never win!" crowd to come in and crow their bullshit.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 19 points 1 hour ago (4 children)

But we ran two uncharismatic women with policy literally no one liked!!!1111eleven

/s

AOC's age, sexuality, gender, literally any demographic, doesn't matter.

She's charismatic and has popular policy.

That's literally all that matters in a candidate, because it's a popularity contest for people and policy.

That's why Republicans, neoliberals, and billionaire owned media are scared shitless that she runs.

Progressives won't be stopped by the DNC in the next primary, and if a progressive makes it to the general they'll easily win.

We're gonna see some last minute shenanigans like in Maine, oligarchs will risk kneecapping the dem candidate in the general if there's a chance to replace a progressive with a moderate.

[–] Kirp123@lemmy.world 5 points 35 minutes ago

Clinton won the popular vote so that shows her being a woman wasn't really that big a thing. She only lost because of the backward shit that is the Electoral College.

As for Harris she didn't lose because she was a woman, she lost because she ran a shit campaign and was a pretty shitty candidate.

[–] BadmanDan@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

Non of that even matters. When the economy is “bad” according to the public. The incumbent always loses the presidential election. AOC can easily win in 2028, so can Kamala, so can Newsom. Years like 2012 were seen as “bad” for the economy to the average person, that’s where the media narrative around that election falls apart. But 92 and 76 both show that bad economies end presidencies.

I'd vote for her in a heart beat. Unfortunately there is a significant percentage of the US population that will never vote for a woman. Sexism, machismo, and bravado got a lot of non white people to vote for trump

[–] 13igTyme@piefed.social 1 points 7 minutes ago

Reminder the only times Trump won was against a woman. Even after both Hilary and Kamala were cool, calm, and collected during the debate there were plenty of people saying, "I'm not voting for either candidate because I hate Trump and [she] is too emotional to be president."

[–] iluvlamp37@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

She’s obviously unqualified dude, it’s a prerequisite that you need to suck the dick of every Fortune 500 CEO to run for president

[–] meco03211@lemmy.world 7 points 1 hour ago (1 children)
[–] iluvlamp37@lemmy.zip 1 points 35 seconds ago

Oh I forgot about the most important one too, Netanyahu

[–] danc4498@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

Are people actually saying she couldn’t get elected cause she’s a “progressive woman”? Seems like age an experience would be the obvious reasons people would say she can’t win.

I love AOC, and hope she runs and would root for her every step of the way. But I would be shocked if she won the nomination simply because House of Representatives is her only real achievement. Seems more likely she would run for Senate before running for president.

[–] cattywampas@lemmy.world 29 points 2 hours ago

Yes. The more the merrier. Let's have a big field and an actual primary so we can pick the best candidate.

[–] maga_is_death@lemmy.zip 1 points 14 minutes ago

More boomers need to die or we need to get rid of the electoral college to make this possible. Boomers grew up in a very different world and are a large reason that this country can't move forward in any meaningful way. Demographically, there are a lot of them and they vote at very high rates. Until they move on, or we stop allowing presidential elections to be decided by a handful of swing states/districts, we are going to be stuck in this ridiculous quagmire. Women/minorities will continue to fight an unnecessarily difficult uphill battle on the national stage.

[–] northernlights@lemmy.today 7 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

She absolutely must. As a woman of color it's going to be tough as nails but worst case scenario she will publicly say many good things and even she doesn't win the voices she gets will have quite the meaning.

[–] BadmanDan@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Why does this sub think her identity will stop her? Incumbents ALWAYS struggle with reelection when the economy is bad.

YOU could run in 2028, and probably beat the republicans.

[–] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 3 points 57 minutes ago (3 children)

I think "can a woman win" with be a popular attack by centrists in the primary. Same thing they did with Warren when she was briefly leading. They'll yas queen the shittiest empty pantsuits and cheer minority voices right up until the woman or minority is progressive, then they'll JAQ off incessantly about whether they can win the vote of their MAGA uncle who was never going to vote Democrat in the first place. And if they don't have a MAGA uncle they'll imagine one to wring their hands over.

AOC can win, but the centrists are going to do a lot of "I'm not sexist, but" the whole primary and try to get a bunch of normies to become political pundits and vote for someone who says nothing "because it's electable".

[–] BadmanDan@lemmy.world 2 points 45 minutes ago (1 children)

I don’t think centrist attacks of “can a woman win” in the 2028 primary will even work consider AOC and Kamala are 2 of the front runners in polling/enthusiasm. The only male up there with them is Newsom. There is no Biden-like candidate with the Obama rub to skirt by.

AOC is in prime position in 2028 as long as there’s no other DSA-like candidate splitting their vote.

Honestly her biggest challenge in 2028, is gonna be the progressive biggest challenge in 2016 and 2024 that they keep ignoring. THE BLACK VOTERS! Bernie refused to target that demo, despite them making up a huge portion of the democratic electorate, and right now Kamala is polling around 35%-45% of the black vote. If she walks into South Carolina/Super Tuesday with those numbers, she gonna be the nominee easily.

Fortunately for AOC, she more motion with black voters than Bernie and has actually been reaching out to them this year on her media events.

[–] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 2 points 15 minutes ago

I don't really think this delusion that Harris is a viable candidate will last until 2028, and if she's gone every single name being trial-ballooned is a white man.

On Black voters, AOC is from the Bronx. She doesn't have the same blinders as Bernie. The real problem isn't the black voters in general, it's that the DNC chose older and more conservative South Carolina to represent them and loaded it right up front to set an expectation. Maryland and Georgia both have a greater proportion of black voters and they have a different political lean.

For the American left, in the 2028 presidential election, there is a straightforward answer to that question: AOC must run for president. If she doesn’t, she is leaving significant gains on the table. Not gains for her; gains for the movement, for the working class, for progress, and for the world.

If the Left really cared about the working class (they don't), they'd let the working class choose their own leader (they won't).

Now, to be fair, this is by no means exclusive to the Left. Neither liberals or conservatives are willing to give the working class any kind of real power or autonomy, either. No one is.

[–] TotalSonic@lemmy.world 4 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (4 children)

I think people would be better served by a Senate run from her, in which she has a decent chance to win in New York, versus a POTUS run, for which from any honest evaluation of current voter inclinations in the States beyond NorthEast & West Coast, given the Electoral College system and who controls the "main stream" media these days, as well as the massive cash that would be pushed against her, she has no chance to win - at all. The only possible positive thing a Presidential run from her could do is push the DNC platform a tiny bit towards the more compassionate/empathetic side, but I seriously doubt she would even come close to winning the D's nomination, and even then if she did, the R nominee would sadly end up winning the General election.

[–] Rhaedas@fedia.io 1 points 10 minutes ago

Senate seat or Speaker of the House, let her gain more power in Congress and help to transform the other seats there to progressives a state and district at a time. Also keeps her potentially in control longer than even an eight term Presidential position. Granted, it is possible to drop back down to Congress after President, but I don't think it's been done much or at all, and certainly not in today's world where the security would be a big deal. Her momentum and baggage, even if it was a good Presidency, will impede her work, and again that's eight years lost in changing the larger picture of the government. The long term goals are I think far more important here than the next four or eight years.

[–] crusa187@lemmy.ml 3 points 47 minutes ago

Completely agree. She isn’t ready for president, but she could massively help the movement at this time by ousting Chuck Schumer.

The liberals trying to convince her go for the White House at this premature juncture are saboteurs.

To be clear, I think she should run eventually and could make a fantastic president, just not yet. Please AOC, do the right thing and oust that crusty old Chucklefuck.

It's not even a real democracy.

[–] Canconda@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago) (5 children)

AOC can definitely do the job. I don't think there's any questions there. Her presidential run is a given long term. But running in 2028 is very much a last ditch effort to save democracy and I hope Americans understand that.

The root problem is American apathy. While AOC might be a solution to that, the concern I have is how big of a target a presidential run puts on her. AOC in many ways is the political successor of Bernie Sanders. We're all expecting his passing before 2040. If the GOP/ETC target AOC, and she falls, who will lead in her stead?

What worries me (as a non-american) is that if American's don't unify the movement will die with her.

[–] WhoIzDisIz@lemmy.today 7 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

There are others capable of taking up the reins, such as Mamdani. The movement won't die, but potentially might be a bit rudderless for a bit as it figures out how to regroup & try again.

Unfortunately, the subset of Americans who actually understand what's at stake still seems to be smaller than we'd like. Fortunately, enough of the other side had started becoming disillusioned enough with Cheeto Messiah that they will at least not be so much of an obstacle.
