I waited too long, but I’ve been slowly going through Game of Thrones for the first time this summer. Yes, I’m aware the last season is terrible.
After books end, it takes a drop in quality. So season 5. Good luck. I enjoyed the fuck out of it until then.
Decide for yourself, it received a huge amount of hate and most people just jumped on the train for the sake of hating it. While I agree the last season was rushed, I quite enjoyed some aspects of it. I did not read any of the books and will not read them ever probably.
It's really like the last three seasons. Once they got past the source material it increasingly became bullet points.
It was really, really good for so long. I've been tempted to rewatch it. Lots of series have terrible endings and are still enjoyable.
I had a realization lately that the last season didn’t just ruin GoT for me. I think it subconsciously ruined TV. I’ve not gotten invested in a non-comedy series since then.
If I'm honest, it really feels like a LOT of media got suddenly worse some time in the 2010s in general. TV, movies, big budget games - I know enshittification is a thing in every industry, but it feels like there was a major quality drop in such a short period of time.
There are obviously some exceptions, but it's like a switch was flipped, and my interest was gone. GoT was one that carried on for a while, but then it succumbed to it too.
So many writer strikes since then.
Still gems of course
The reason why the outcry over GoT's decline was so loud is that it actually managed to make previous seasons worse by its existence. All that intrigue your favourite characters were building over the previous 5 seasons? None of that ever mattered; either it got forgotten about by the writers, or the character switched into stupid mode and threw all their progress away for no reason. Once you've become aware of that, it's hard to get on board with their development on rewatch.
The Battlestar Galactica remake is like this. I love the show, but that ending seemed to go off the fucking rails
the reimagined series is too strange compared to TOS, the showrunner has a messianic(the showrunner is apparently christian faith so that may have something to do with it) vision of series, with very litle backstory into those non-corporeal beings other than they are "angels". and the failed caprica series.
Ha, this is exactly the one I had in mind with my comment. I've re-watched it many times.
I still can't bring myself to watch any of the spin offs. People keep telling me how good they are, but I was burned before and need time to learn to love again.
I don't think they are good so much as they are currently on and actively being advertised.
Yeah, that's the case with a lot of media. But I've had three different people tell me they were good and asked if I was watching. I'm gonna wait until they're over before committing.
What spin offs are people telling you are good? Inquiring minds want to know.
Knight of the 7 Kingdoms (aka Hedge Knight) was the best imo. House of the Dragon I couldnt finish the first season.

Same. It's actually insane to me how quickly people were willing to forgive that shit.
My spouse actually liked the last 2 seasons and ending, I was just disappointed by last 2 seasons.
But, I'm a jaded old misanthrope that read the books 1st, up to when that was impossible, and wanted the dark theme to continue and/or time skip to happen.
Same here just finished it a few weeks ago.
I never read the books but for my money I thought the last season was really good. It maybe didnt end the way I wanted it to but it wasnt a bad ending by any means.
I have also never read the books but that last season throws every character development out the window in a show all about characters and just rushes through scenes ignoring any build up to conclude to whatever shit the writers thought no one would ever guess because it was more important for them to not be guessed than to make it make sense.
It is objectively a horrible season, doubly so in contrast to the first one.

Very possibly so. I'm also not a huge believer in the sanctity of lore when you are adapting something to a different medium. IE, didnt miss Tom Bombadil in the Lord if the Rings movies so I'm pretty easy going as long as the adaptation is good in its own right.

But seriously though, fuck Bran. Terrible character, just completely uninteresting and ~~lame~~ uncool from the word go. Gets Hodor killed, somehow through unexplained time travel causes Hodor's "hodor" problem. A girl takes him all the way through the frozen north just for him to say, bye now! Trash character. Ser Davos should have been King at the end.Also haven't read the books, but personally I felt that introducing teleportation in the last few seasons was certainly a choice
The show runners were in a rush to finish up and get to their next project (which never ended up happening). That, and the fact they ran out of source material to pull from is thought to be why the quality of the show dropped so much.

I even went back a few years later and rewatched, despite all the bullshit. Still hate the last few seasons, not even just 8.
I'll second the other commenter. With your preconceived notion being "terrible," you might be pleasantly surprised and find that it's merely "rushed." GoT is partly a cultural artifact as the last genre project that truly captured the monoculture's attention (it laughs at Severance's or Stanger Things' so-called impact) before the internet shattered it, so everything good and bad about it was dramatically amplified.
