Democrat socialists of America. They're a political party inside the Democrat party that's focused of progressive politics. They all refuse AIPAC donations, condemn Israel's genocide, want to tax the rich, and basically do everything government is supposed to.
Mamdani, Abdul El-Sayed, and the like are part of it I believe.
They want to form their own political party but understand in America people basically will not vote third party so they're trying to do a massive coup and push Democrat party hard left. They've been getting some massive wins recently too.
Whew.
No. It's not inside the Democratic party. DSA is a separate organization that will endorse and support candidates. It's a big tent and there's a lot of competing politics. Chapters report to national and chapters are typically at the city level.
DSA is in the process of nominating progressives in all sorts of local and national elections. But DSA is more than electoral politics. You will find mutual aid, outreach and other activities in that org.
Source: me. Join your local DSA. Or start your own chapter.
Well then they really need to work on unifying their messaging among their local chapters because that's not how they sell themselves around me at all.
I mean, no. The local chapters have quite a lot of autonomy. Which is a good thing.
The DSA has a lot of factions and basically no barrier to entry. You're going to find all types. Some of them run food distributions and scream at any passing cop. Some of them are into getting even centrist dems elected. And there's a lot of problems with more centralized national organizing.
Is there any Canadian equivalent you’re aware of?
In terms of size and agenda I'd say the NDP is the closest thing up there. Though DSA is a caucus of the Democratic Party while NDP is it's own whole party.
No, sorry. But I don't see why you couldn't start one if there isn't one. Or a DSC 😃
99% of moving people in your communities is just showing up and doing the things.
Wikipedia says it's less of a party and more of an action group that campaigns for ideologically aligned candidates. Either way, seems worth putting time into!
Kind of like the congressional black caucus.
Historians like to observe DSAs look like Eisenhower Republicans. The DSA does have some (worthwhile!) radical ideas on where to move the Overton window, but their current midterms platform is tame.
