Seems like they learned nothing from the Spanish American War. Congress was worried that war with Spain was being pushed for territorial expansion, so they passed the Teller amendment, specifically forbidding Cuba from being made a US territory. Unfortunately, they didn't say anything about the other Spanish colonies (Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam) because i don't think they expected the degree with which the imperialists were poised to go for those other colonies.

"Well, just don't do it again!^*^"

^*^ ^to^ ^Venezuela^

Harsh stuff.

Sen. Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, voted for the measure.

“While I support the operation to seize Nicolas Maduro, which was extraordinary in its precision and complexity, I do not support committing additional U.S. forces or entering into any long-term military involvement in Venezuela or Greenland without specific congressional authorization,” Collins said in a statement.

Well, thank goodness. I guess what Trump did was good but also we've informed him in no uncertain terms that he shouldn't do it again.

... to Venezuela. And Congress is ready to say the same thing right after he attacks Greenland, Cuba, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Canada or any other country he has said he wants to attack.^*^ Mr. Trump, you only get one invasion per country! Let that be a lesson to you!

* Except Nigeria and Somalia. And Iran.

And Greenland!

Sure. Those other countries (Canada excepted, I guess?) are Global South countries we need to kick into line from time to time. Don't forget how we're currently bombing Nigeria, a story that's flown almost entirely under the radar because... fuck Africans, I guess?

Well they’re black, so what did they expect? /s

[–] MrVilliam@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

"Well y'all got uppity when we were killing blacks here at home, so what are we supposed to do? Kill zero blacks total? Pfft. Get a load of this guy. Next I guess you'll be expecting us to fuck zero children. Be realistic."

We've been at that for decades.

47 straight up war mongering, no shame senators who definitely ain't putting America first. How are these losers even getting votes from the right at this point?

I clicked on a twitter link yesterday to some shooting footage. I made the mistake of skimming the comments. Just read any political post on Twitter and you'll see these people love what's happening. If they could all get together somehow, they would jerk each other off so hard they all have friction burns.

it's not nothing but it's damn close

I hope the resolution is very sternly-worded!

Now if only trump wasn't such an narcissist and had a moral compass so he respected rules, laws and verdicts .......

[–] Voroxpete@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago

The problem, in this case, isn't Trump defying the law, it's that there are far too many legal ways for him to get away with this shit.

Since 1974, when Congress got their shit together enough to pass the War Powers Resolution with a veto proof majority, they've basically been constantly ceding war powers back to the president through open ended Authorizations for Use of Military Force, with no expiry and unbelievably vague terms. Biden, for example, cited the 2002 AUMF for his military actions.

Until Congress actually gets together and undoes that mess - which, to my understanding, will once again require a veto proof majority - presidents will basically be free to do as they please with the military.

That's cute
