PSA this is correct. Any bread, potato etc has to be ordered separately in Bulgaria, but the waiters ask if you'd like any in case you forget, so you're safe.

This must be most valuable piece of information I found on fediverse this whole year.

The restaurants I visit (in the US) have what comes with the meal. Sometimes in the meal listing. Sometimes grouping. Like "Comes with potato wedges or swap with side soup +$2".

If anything, I'm usually surprised when it comes with extras like garnish.

I usually miss the tiny text that says "includes a side" and then I panic when I need to make a decision while the waiter lists off all 14 sides including something incomprehensible like "Tato Dunklets" and I have to ask them what that is even though everyone else knows that's what the place is known for and now I'm the idiot that is taking forever to order and keeping everyone from their dunklets or whatever.

My guy, they have medication for your condition.

[–] Naich@lemmings.world 31 points 1 week ago (2 children)

That would be a deal breaker for me.

Why, just Bulgarian restaurants work a bit differently. Sides are never included and must be asked, even bread is ordered separately, but it's dirt cheap and wait staff will politely ask if you'd like to add any to your order in case you forgot.

This should be the way.

I hate how ordering something gives you an obligation to fries, or rice, or whatever.

I might want a burger with some wings instead.

Then ask for it. The defaults are just different but still can be changed.

Exactly. You might be charged a bit more depending on the substitution, but that's about it.

right? do you think they want you going home upset and hungry? order what you want to eat.

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 week ago

I will be upset if I paid more than I should have.

i have a reputation at my favorite greek restaurant for ordering something that is not supposed to be an entree, but ordering a meal sized portion and sharing it with everyone at the table (last time was a ton of dolmades, time before was a plate of fries covered in gyro and tzatziki). they love me because they never know what i'm going to order and the floor staff usually takes bets on how long it will take and how much of it my skinny ass is going to finish (not long enough and all of it is the owner's usual bet, she usually wins). it is a great restaurant.

Would you like some caviar and the finest champagne with that order of plural potato?

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Yet nostalgia, no potato mother used to cook when I was young

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago
