Debian slaps hood it just works

[–] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 34 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Same but among arch users it's "your config" and "my config".

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 25 points 6 days ago

I use arch btw

[–] trollercoaster@sh.itjust.works 22 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Someone using Arch, by the way, in 3... 2... 1...

Me, too, BTW

Don’t install NixOS. Seriously. It is insanity

[–] TORFdot0@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

They’ve played us for absolute fools

[–] nil@piefed.ca 2 points 4 days ago

It's a cult that haunts you even after you quit it

[–] underisk@lemmy.ml 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Don’t install NixOS because it’s got Anduril and Palantir all over it.

[–] SatyrSack@quokk.au 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

What does "all over it" mean in this context?

[–] jackr@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 6 days ago

Big users, contributors, and sponsors. Sponsored Nixcon. The nix organisation seems to have no problem with this.

[–] djsaskdja@reddthat.com 4 points 6 days ago

I’d be willing to argue that running anything OTHER than NixOS is insanity. Except maybe Debian. Everyone loves Debian.

[–] trollercoaster@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Is it? Haven't met any very forthcoming NixOS users yet, but time will tell.

[–] mech@feddit.org 5 points 6 days ago

Their recommendation usually starts with a disclaimer, and ends with "But it's worth it, cause you can easily clone your machine".
For me, one look at https://nixos.org/manual/nixos/stable/#ch-configuration and https://nixos.org/manual/nixos/stable/options is enough to know it's way too much hassle for me. I'll stick with Slackware.

[–] brotundspiele@sh.itjust.works 9 points 5 days ago

I don't want to brag, but I have like 5 Linux distros in my garage. And I drive them all, regularly.

[–] CaptainCancel@sh.itjust.works 13 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I use Fedora. It fucks up less than Win11, so I’m sticking with it.

[–] qjkxbmwvz@startrek.website 8 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Torvalds uses it too I believe, so you're in good company (Debian for me, though my heart belongs to Slackware).

[–] Hudell@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 5 days ago

I can't handle Debian; my heart constantly craves shiny new things.

I am quite satisfied with my OpenSuse Tumbleweed

[–] other_cat@piefed.zip 1 points 1 hour ago

I have Mint on my main PC but I put open suse tumbleweed on my laptop and I gotta say, I kind of love it. I probably won't swap my main PC unless Mint does something to upset me, but I'm glad I have a fallback.

[–] somerandomperson@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

WHY DOES NO ONE GET THAT IT DEPENDS?
... srsly tho, how do you want your distro to be?

I use a dependency manager, so I don’t need to think about “it depends”.

[–] theneverfox@pawb.social 10 points 6 days ago

I like baszite. I'm not in love with it, but it does most things I want it to do right out of the box, and it comes with steam installed which is convenient

[–] 3abas@lemmy.world 9 points 6 days ago

I've used debian/Ubuntu based distros most of my life, so that's what I'm most comfortable with, I've used arch/suse/Gentoo here and there but I always go back to debian based.

Currently on pop os and have been daily driving cosmic desktop since alpha, REALLY happy with it. I attempted to install cachyos and the installer was super polished, but then it wouldn't boot on my hardware, so I went back to pop.

[–] michael@piefed.chrisco.me 7 points 6 days ago

Im guilty of this. As long as they are using Linux though it makes me happy.

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago

Windose users do not understand this meme

[–] tomenzgg@midwest.social 4 points 6 days ago

Guix; fill your life with parentheses. It's worth it, I tell ya.

[–] jakobmn@feddit.dk 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I drive an e-up! and use Alpine Linux btw. Both gets the job done without too much fuss or unnecessary bloat.

[–] afk_strats@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

You use Alpine as a daily driver? With a GUI? How does it do with hardware support?

[–] jakobmn@feddit.dk 4 points 6 days ago

I use it on a Thinkpad x60s where Alpine has a lot better support for such old hardware. But I use an arm based chromebook with PostmarketOS more often (also Alpine based). At work it's either Alpine or NixOS for headless servers.

[–] ExtraMedicated@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

I like MX Linux.

[–] goatinspace@feddit.org 2 points 6 days ago

Could try Nobara for starters.
