More kitchen devices need to follow what ricecookers are doing and play a charming melody when finished.

[–] jeffep@lemmy.world 2 points 48 minutes ago

Do you set the timer to 61s as well?

Appliances should never ever beep, change my mind. What happened to the good old "bing" or "brrrrrrring"?

Beeping makes my skin crawl!

[–] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 1 points 54 minutes ago

My ADHD brain can barely remember putting something in the microwave. I need the beep to remind myself to check it

[–] bleistift2@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 hour ago

It’s probably way cheaper to add a speaker than an actual, physical bell. But I agree. My microwave dings and I’m fine with that.

[–] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works 31 points 4 hours ago (3 children)

Just because you can hear it doesn’t mean everyone can. Beeps are interruptive too.

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

And increasing beeping volume would be good. First beep should be nearly muted. 4th beep should be judging.

[–] Pika@sh.itjust.works 6 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

my grandfather cant even hear the beeping, let alone if the microwave is running.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 minutes ago

Agreed that companies need to lower the note of their beeps to old-man hearing tones.

[–] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago

they make some devices that electrocute you when running and when they're done, stop.

My microwave has an option to turn off all the beeps, and it's a landlord special so I imagine others can do the same. Check your model and see if it has that option.

For mine, I literally need to hold down I think the number 3 for 5 seconds. It's in no way obvious.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 minutes ago

Mine doesn't have any kind of mute option, I checked the manual.

[–] ramenshaman@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

Mine has it and is currently muted

[–] demlet@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

Where's the challenge in that?

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 20 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

Y'all better be clearing the timer so it returns to clock mode afterwards

[–] ramenshaman@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Do you actually use your microwave to find out what time it is?

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 4 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Uh, yeah, it's got a built-in clock.

[–] ramenshaman@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Mine does too but even though it (and my oven) tell the time I look at my watch, phone, or the dedicated clock in my living room

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago (1 children)
  • I don't wear a watch, especially not while I'm busy in the kitchen
  • My phone is usually on my pocket, and it's easier to just turn my head than to reach into my pocket, pull out my phone, and turn it on. And also wash my hands if, again, I'm doing kitchen stuff in the kitchen.
  • The microwave is in the kitchen, which is a different room than the living room.

You sound way too reasonable. What's the catch?

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 hours ago

Our new one has the option to not have a clock and just be blank so it’s extra annoying when somebody leaves the timer on and the screen stays on blinking ‘cook time’.

[–] pedz@lemmy.ca 17 points 4 hours ago (4 children)

My previous microwave oven had a mute button. That thing stayed permanently silent. Unfortunately I have never found a new model that can be muted.

Cue a Technology Connection video about how old microwave ovens were better.

I just can't wait for microwave to have an integration with AI. I just need another internet connected device that can recommend a nice laxative after scanning what it just cooked. Not only that but it could integrate with my smart fridge and make sure that it orders food that is just about to expire from Instacart. And with its partnership with Doordash, the microwave could just stop working and order a replacement meal for me.

...said no one ever.

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 3 points 2 hours ago

Many if not most microwaves can be muted, but they usually don't have a special button for it.

It's often some secret button combination. READ YOUR MICROWAVE'S MANUAL.

[–] Encephalotrocity@feddit.online 4 points 4 hours ago

I've got a newer (5yo) Maytag that has a silent mode that you can choose either with end beep or without. It resets every power outage which is my only gripe.

[–] dalekcaan@feddit.nl 2 points 2 hours ago

Mine doesn't even let you interrupt the beeping. If it goes off it's doing the whole sequence whether you like it or not.

[–] Ghostie@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

I had a microwave that not only beeped when finished but also beeped every 10-15 seconds if the door wasn’t opened and food retrieved. I donated it and bought a new one because I wasn’t about to put up with that audacity.

[–] crazycraw@crazypeople.online 8 points 4 hours ago

newb. I save the world by stopping it on 0:00 before the screen goes away.

[–] Nurse_Robot@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago

I found out my microwave has a mute function. That's my discovery of the year

[–] demlet@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

Looks like I found my people.

[–] DudeImMacGyver@kbin.earth 4 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Bomb diffused. Counter terrorists win!

[–] demlet@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

I would expect nothing less from MacGyver.

[–] CookieOfFortune@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Mine has a setting but it doesn’t get saved after a power outage which occurs a couple times a year.

[–] spicytuna62@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago

Honestly, though, if a stopwatch counts milliseconds, I'm gonna see how close to 0 I can get without letting it hit 0

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (2 children)

There are videos on how to disable it permanently

It does require a little disassembly. I have considered doing this but I use the timer on the microwave a lot when baking things.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 6 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Never disassemble a microwave unless you know exactly what you're doing. Like a CRT monitor, the capacitors are big enough to kill you.

Many microwaves have some sort of button combo that'll mute it.

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago

Yeah I should have mentioned that. Definitely watch YouTube videos and be super careful to follow safety precautions.

Even unplugged capacitors can hurt you pretty bad and possibly kill you.

It's easy to not injure yourself as long as you know about this and how to avoid it. But don't go in blind.

[–] proudblond@lemmy.world 6 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

Mine has a setting for sound off, which is great because it is a horrific loud beep, three times that doesn’t stop even if you try to interrupt it with a button or by opening the door. Anytime we have a power outage, it resets and I turn that damn beep off before I even change the clock because it annoys me so much.

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 3 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

After a power outage, my microwave absolutely refuses to do anything until I set the time. As if it's a clock that also happens to have the ability to cook food, and not the other way around.

[–] Pika@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 hours ago

mine is this way as well. it will count inputs as setting the clock and if you put an invalid time in has a hissy fit and isn't clear what it is asking of you. The amount of times my grandfather has tried to use it after losing power and got frusterated because he was trying to cook something and the clock wanted to set the time as something stupid like 30:22 or something like that is annoying.

[–] Pika@sh.itjust.works 4 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago) (2 children)

THIS NEEDS TO BE MAINSTREAM.

There is very little reason that with the digital behemoths that microwaves are now, that a simple "sound off" setting can't be done.

I would also love a "sound off for this cycle" option, but that might be being too needy

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

Even an analog switch on the back would be simple and easy to add. I know a lot of them do have ways to turn sound off. But many don't. And a simple switch on the backside would make things so much easier.

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

There is very little reason that with the digital behemoths that microwaves are now, that a simple “sound off” setting can’t be done.

Most microwaves already have this feature, it's just not obvious how to use it. Read your microwave's user manual.

[–] Pika@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

mine has a way to change the clock to 24h and the ability to calibrate the hot keys, but sadly doesn't seem to have a sound control.

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 1 points 1 hour ago

Well, time to disassemble it (safely discharge the capacitors!), find the beeper on the control board, and de-solder it.
