Any sound output should always, always have a volume control or on/off toggle. Sound is very subjective.

[–] meekah@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 22 hours ago

I just got an old one that dings instead of beeping. much nicer

[–] AlsaValderaan@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 21 hours ago

I used to have a microwave that you could stop at 0 if you hit the right time. Before the finish beeps but still at 0. It was like a frame perfect press though, really hard to get.

Also at my work there's someone who likes to leave it at 0:01. When I come in in the morning and it displays that I don't know the time. Gr. Use the little red button kthx

Who is the actor and why do I recognize him?!?

[–] los0220@lemmy.world 1 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

My current one insists on beeping exactly 3 times whether I open the door or not. Fucking annoying. 30 y/o one at my dad's doesn't and it makes it a 1000x better device

[–] maplesaga@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago

Mine beeps when I open it, like its telling me, "I'm beeping whether you like it or not".

[–] LifeLikeLady@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My wife does this... And then doesn't clear the timer. Ever. Not once. Fucking annoying.

Just because you can hear it doesn’t mean everyone can. Beeps are interruptive too.

[–] Pika@sh.itjust.works 13 points 2 days ago (3 children)

my grandfather cant even hear the beeping, let alone if the microwave is running.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 days ago

Agreed that companies need to lower the note of their beeps to old-man hearing tones.

And increasing beeping volume would be good. First beep should be nearly muted. 4th beep should be judging.

My microwave has an option to turn off all the beeps, and it's a landlord special so I imagine others can do the same. Check your model and see if it has that option.

For mine, I literally need to hold down I think the number 3 for 5 seconds. It's in no way obvious.

Appliances should never ever beep, change my mind. What happened to the good old "bing" or "brrrrrrring"?

Beeping makes my skin crawl!

[–] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

My ADHD brain can barely remember putting something in the microwave. I need the beep to remind myself to check it

[–] meekah@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 22 hours ago

they're suggesting a different noise, not that it's supposed to be silent

[–] bleistift2@sopuli.xyz 7 points 2 days ago

It’s probably way cheaper to add a speaker than an actual, physical bell. But I agree. My microwave dings and I’m fine with that.

You can mute the microwave. Most microwaves have volume settings.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 46 points 2 days ago (21 children)

Y'all better be clearing the timer so it returns to clock mode afterwards

[–] obvs@lemmy.world 1 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I do NOT set the clock on my microwave. Damn ghostly lights keeping me up in the middle of the night.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

You sleep in your kitchen?

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 14 points 2 days ago

Our new one has the option to not have a clock and just be blank so it’s extra annoying when somebody leaves the timer on and the screen stays on blinking ‘cook time’.

[–] Oaksey@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I’ve said it before, but they should have a time out option of say like 5 or 10 minutes, when it automatically goes back to standby.

Skill issue. Its possible to open it at exactly 0 seconds and it won't beep

My previous microwave oven had a mute button. That thing stayed permanently silent. Unfortunately I have never found a new model that can be muted.

Cue a Technology Connection video about how old microwave ovens were better.

I just can't wait for microwave to have an integration with AI. I just need another internet connected device that can recommend a nice laxative after scanning what it just cooked. Not only that but it could integrate with my smart fridge and make sure that it orders food that is just about to expire from Instacart. And with its partnership with Doordash, the microwave could just stop working and order a replacement meal for me.

...said no one ever.

Every time I think I am special, I find out there are a gazillion people like me.

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Mine doesn't have a way to disable the beep so I opened up the case and de-beeped it by desoldering the piezo.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

yeah, but then it's blinking and i have to press stop to clear the blinking remaining time for the clock to display. I MUST HAVE MY CLOCK. ahem. sorry i don't have any anals that i need to retent or anything.

i once, i swear once pressed open at such a precise time i did not have to press any other buttons to get to the clock and (and this is the important bit) the microwave made no sound. i mean aside from the door clanging open and me squealing and pooting a little. it felt like i had just pumped exactly twenty moneys and i will never reach such heighths again

[–] Salamanderwizard@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Squealing and pooting?

You are a unique person.

I hate it when people leave time on the microwave like this. It annoys me to no end, much more than the beep.

[–] Frenchgeek@lemmy.ml 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Mine doesn't have enough electronics to beep. It does have a literal bell, though.

More kitchen devices need to follow what ricecookers are doing and play a charming melody when finished.

[–] emergencyfood@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

Your rice cookers have electronics in them?

Horrors beyond human understanding.

newb. I save the world by stopping it on 0:00 before the screen goes away.

Hop boy, don’t buy Samsung appliances then! They like to play songs instead of just a beep!

[–] modus@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I turned off all sounds on my microwave and surprisingly it's really disorienting. Not having the aural feedback on the buttons pissed off everyone.
