The joke is that the husband and his friend went to Thailand and his friend transitioned. Now the old friend is "missing" and the husband is married to who that friend became.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 150 points 3 months ago (8 children)

Thanks, I'm dumb and thought she murdered his friend.

[–] myotheraccount@lemmy.world 17 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Not so dumb, given this is probably a screengrab from "you", and this character would definitely have murdered his friend

I thought this was some boomer shit about spouses not listening to each other?

So many different interpretations in the comments.

[–] LaLuzDelSol@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I thought it was just that he didn't need a significant other because he was so close with his friend haha

This would also be a funny interpretation.

Ah, I thought that she kidnapped/killed her husband's best friend. Yeah, maybe I watch too many crime/police bodycam vidyas on YT.

ETA: Ah, I'm not the only one.

I understood "we met shortly after" as talking about the wife and the best friend. Like a hyperbolic expansion of the "adult men don't talk about their lives with their male friends."

[–] illi@piefed.social 176 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Pretty sure that's the joke (the friend is the wife)

[–] zloubida@sh.itjust.works 104 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Oh thanks I didn't understand the joke

[–] General_Effort@lemmy.world 27 points 3 months ago (1 children)

It wouldn't be funny if it was obvious. Thanks for your sacrifice.

[–] BillyClark@piefed.social 14 points 3 months ago (11 children)

Why wouldn't it be funny if it was obvious? Most funny jokes are obvious, at least after the punchline.

I still dont understand. Did she kill the best friend? I dont believe for a second that anyone wouldn't recognize their best friend in a new form.

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 8 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I love your word choices lmao. The "new form" kinda sounds eldritch?

Everyone knows that to transition into a woman you walk into a booth in Bangkok called the "cunt machine" and after a magical girl transformation sequence you walk out a hormed and surged up doll

[–] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works 18 points 3 months ago

Thank you, I had no idea what the OP was about.

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 16 points 3 months ago

My best mate and I used to joke that if one of us was a woman or both of us were gay, it would have saved a lot of time.

[–] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 26 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

Ah, if only both of you were women and both of you were gay :(

In other words, lying to your partner for over a decade? Why and, most importantly, how?

Edit: I wonder what the people who downvote the comment mean by them.

[–] General_Effort@lemmy.world 35 points 3 months ago

Sheesh. Can't a woman be bored by some old story without everyone jumping to far-fetched conclusions!

[–] Walk_blesseD@piefed.blahaj.zone 8 points 3 months ago

Maybe the husband is just deeply incurious and no lies were necessary 🤷‍♀️

[–] daddycool@lemmy.world 17 points 3 months ago

Now that's a good friend. Feeling sorry for his friend who can't find a girlfriend. Then disappears in Thailand so his friend can meet the love of his life.
