they moved the position of the light LED nearby the camera. That's a surprising amount of effort for something that even has the wrong number of stripes on the american flag

[–] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 4 points 1 hour ago

That's kinda crazy. HTC stopped making phones then kinda sorta started again but not in the US

"CT scanners are woke" - Trump supporters, probably

So far, the ONLY benefit I've seen about this phone is that of you go into the developer options, you can immediate jail break it.

[–] meowcar42O@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 46 minutes ago

rooting it or unlocking the bootloader?

[–] ButteryMonkey@piefed.social 24 points 3 hours ago (2 children)

Obtaining root isn't jailbreaking, it’s just taking full control of your linux-based system :)

Jailbreaking is so called because you have to escape the walled garden (jail) of apple products, which is a challenge because they wrote their own code. Not a problem you really have with android to begin with. You don’t even need root for most of what you want to do with android.

I want to install an app in September

[–] Anivia@feddit.org 1 points 24 minutes ago

Well, you won't need root for that

[–] ButteryMonkey@piefed.social 3 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

most of what you want to do

[–] meowcar42O@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 23 minutes ago

why are you defending proprietary software?

[–] meowcar42O@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 47 minutes ago (1 children)

Jailbreaking does not only refer to apple products. It just means overcoming software limitations set by the manufacturer. Rooting an android phone is also jailbreaking

[–] Magnum@infosec.pub 0 points 11 minutes ago

To be fair, it kinda originated in the Apple world

[–] DrSoap@lemmy.world 38 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Does this count as drop shipping?

[–] schnokobaer@feddit.org 17 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

I mean, is it even shipping?

[–] hoshikarakitaridia@lemmy.world 9 points 4 hours ago

Drop skipping

[–] BarbecueCowboy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 19 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

Kinda sucks because I am legitimately interested in a gold HTC phone.

[–] Dettweiler42@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 hours ago

What if you bought an HTC phone and printed a case with Gold TPU?

[–] KoboldCoterie@pawb.social 24 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

This creates an interesting question.

How much cheaper than the base price would it have to be for you to willingly carry around a Trump branded phone that's so immediately recognizable that everyone you meet will know what you're using?

[–] BarbecueCowboy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 3 hours ago

I'd like to say I'd stick to my principles here, but cases cost $10. Worst case I'm in a red state, wouldn't be proud of it, but a bit of maga camo would make my life easier.

OK but isn't HTC's reputation pretty good? Or maybe used to be...

So far I always heard the T1 would be some even cheaper no-brand from China.

OTOH, it could still be exactly that - a no-name rip-off of the HTC U24 Pro. The article actually supports that: the boards are the same but not identical. Like somebody used the same plans, not the same factory.

[–] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 6 points 4 hours ago (3 children)

Does it matter? This phones like 2 years old lol

[–] A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip 8 points 4 hours ago (2 children)

I know 8yo phones that still receive updates.

I wonder how the Trump phone will handle this. Not at all, I suspect.

[–] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 7 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Its not about that, its about this "new trump phone" being some old phone being sold as new

[–] A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip 1 points 3 hours ago

GSMArena lists it as being available on the market.

The T1 is not exactly this device; from the article I get the impression it's built from the same plans, but in a different factory.

It's fairly common for any smaller batches produced mobile devices to be a bit slow to develop & hit the market.

It's still a grift and a rip-off, but the phone having been on the market for just under 2 years is not the worst part.

[–] TheFunkyMonk@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

It won’t, and the people buying this thing won’t know any better.

[–] d5273@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

I'm going back to an old LG phone after my current phone dies. There really has not been much real progress in hardware or software, more like loss of features and controls with new updates these days.

[–] Successful_Try543@feddit.org 1 points 4 hours ago

Does using the same plans imply using the same parts, e.g. the processor, which usually is the limiting factor for providing updates.

[–] NorthWestWind@lemmy.world 6 points 4 hours ago

This technique is like an average bootleg phone you can buy from mainland China

[–] d5273@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Wait, wasn't HTC banned from US sales due to security concerns about Chinese devices?

[–] zikzak025@lemmy.world 17 points 3 hours ago (2 children)

You're thinking of Huawei. HTC is a Taiwanese company that used to be a major player among Android OEMs, but their business dried up and they exited the global market. I didn't even know they were still making phones, to be honest.

[–] d5273@lemmy.world 4 points 3 hours ago

You are correct. I had a ZUK phone at the time, it kicked ass. Miss that little thing...

[–] d5273@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

I think I'm thinking of ZTE, the change was like 2016-2017.

I had a ZUK phone at the time, and it was amazing. Lenovo bought them and incorporated them, and my Lenovo phone was also excellent but useless in the States due to using different bands/lack of software for the West.
