Kumail literally had a stand up bit when he was much less well known about being called "Kumar" and how he dreams of the day that he is the goto point of reference that racists use to stereotype other brown people and himself. So Kal should proud of that, at least.

Also, I work with a lot of Middle Eastern and Indian people with a wide variety of names. It is weird that these three celebrities talking about being mistaken for each other all have names starting with K, containing an A, and ending with L. Kumail, Kunal, and Kal. Maybe it's not so much about them being mistaken for each other but switching similar names around, like white guys called Kayden, Brayden, and Layden.

I wonder how good we are at distinguishing those Chris actors compared to distinguishing the actors in the OP.

Haha thanks Wiki, there’s a name:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_Chrises

[–] 4am@lemmy.zip 2 points 23 minutes ago

I mean, it’s also the racism that probably causes people to not give enough of a fuck to bother to recognize the difference; but the grammatical aspect ain’t making it any easier if you read at a 5th grade level

Me: "who are any of these people?"

[–] candyman337@piefed.ca 32 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (3 children)

Things they're best known for:

Dinesh from Silicon Valley

Raj from Big Bang Theory

Kumar from Harold and Kumar, and also the Associate Director in the White House Office of Public Engagement during the Obama Administration

[–] ilinamorato@lemmy.world 14 points 1 hour ago (3 children)

I would say that Kumail Nanjiani might also be well-known these days for being the guy who had a role in the Marvel flop "Eternals," and a subsequently hilarious press junket and social media tour.

And Kal Penn was also Dr. Kutner in "House MD," which was mostly notable because his character was suddenly and unceremoniously killed off so that Penn could go work for Obama.

[–] 4am@lemmy.zip 3 points 20 minutes ago

I’ll always know him as Prismo

[–] zaphod@sopuli.xyz 1 points 8 minutes ago

Kumail Nanjiani also had a role in the awful Kenobi series. Although of the three I think Kunal Nayyar is the one who had the least remarkable roles.

[–] JoeBigelow@lemmy.ca 4 points 59 minutes ago

Jesus, is that why they did that? That episode fucked me up

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 22 points 2 hours ago (3 children)

Don't forget Sarah Silverman, known for stand up comedy (?)

[–] riskey@lemmy.world 8 points 1 hour ago (2 children)
[–] db_null@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 54 minutes ago

Omg, I watched Voyager 100 times and never recognised her

[–] Spur4383@lemmy.world 5 points 1 hour ago

For the voice of glitchy in Wreck it Ralph

[–] DasFaultier@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

That's right. Also (among other things) for appearances in SNL.

[–] cmbabul@slrpnk.net 5 points 1 hour ago

She had a show and was on a bunch of celebrity roasts too

[–] Trashcan@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

Kumar worked in the white house? An actor got that jobb??

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 2 points 32 minutes ago

You'll never guess what Tom Morello studied at uni

[–] BunScientist@lemmy.zip 30 points 3 hours ago (8 children)

The second guy was in the big bang theory and the third guy was in Dr. House, idk who the first guy is

[–] cmbabul@slrpnk.net 58 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Sir or madam the third one is Kumar, he went to White Castle long before he applied to Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital

[–] homes@piefed.world 38 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

And then left that show to join the Obama administration. Seriously.

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 11 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (2 children)

I was sure this was a troll when it happened, but no, it was real. Does anyone know if he did a good job?

[–] homes@piefed.world 10 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

As I recall, he was a perfectly competent staff member. I think he worked on the speechwriting team? It was a while ago, now, so I don’t remember most of the details.

Iirc, he only worked in the first Obama administration, and then returned to Hollywood. Apparently, having a perfectly normal job for four years was enough.

[–] cmbabul@slrpnk.net 6 points 1 hour ago

I believe Obama tweeted about it when he left and that he did

[–] varden@lemmy.world 40 points 2 hours ago (6 children)

Kumail Nanjiani is a comedian and actor. He was in Silicon Valley and more recently he got shredded for Marvel's Eternals. He's pretty funny.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 2 points 32 minutes ago

I almost read that name as "Kathy Najimy" (the actress from Sister Act and Hocus Pocus) just now.

[–] Telodzrum@lemmy.world 14 points 2 hours ago

He was also just on the most recent season of Taskmaster. Pretty funny guy.

[–] Apepollo11@lemmy.world 10 points 1 hour ago

He's also in the Fallout TV series and the Obi Wan Kenobi series

[–] DasFaultier@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 hour ago (1 children)
[–] needanke@feddit.org 3 points 1 hour ago
[–] lobut@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 hour ago (1 children)

He was also in an episode of Community for the final paintball episode.

[–] zaphod@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 minutes ago

Deputy Custodian Lapari, he's in at least one episode in season 5, Analysis of Cork-Based Networking, the paintball episode is season 6, Modern Espionage.

[–] AWistfulNihilist@lemmy.world 6 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

So sad he got jacked for that movie, but at least he remained jacked.

[–] ltxrtquq@lemmy.ml 15 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

he got shredded for Marvel’s Eternals

Without your comment for context, I thought he was being blamed for how bad/mediocre Eternals was

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 6 points 2 hours ago

This is also what i thought the comment meant

[–] AWistfulNihilist@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago

That's funny, honestly his section with his manager was the best part of the movie. "He tried to kill me in me sleep!" "I thought he was a vampire!"

[–] reminiscensdeus@eviltoast.org 13 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Silicon Valley & Adventure Time are his best roles imo but he’s pretty prolific

[–] TIEPilot@lemmy.world 4 points 2 hours ago

“Optimal Tip-to-Tip Efficiency” I do know one of these guys!

[–] Crostro@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

He played, or voiced more accurately, prismo in adventure time. He's also a stand up comedian

Same here, I don't watch TV so I'm clueless.

I do know who Sarah is, my favorite role of hers was in The Way of the Gun and she gets decked.

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

I liked her most in Star Trek, easy to get a crush on that character

[–] TIEPilot@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

Didn't know she was on star trek, I'll have to review the historical records.

Shit, I owe an apology to Karan Soni, because I was sure it was one of those 3 playing Dopinder until I looked it up.

[–] blazeknave@lemmy.world 3 points 48 minutes ago

Dopinder is on the multi-list. Plays the Indian Spider-Man in the Miles Morales animated movies.

[–] itsgroundhogdayagain@lemmy.ml 8 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Why are they still on Twitter?

[–] fatalicus@lemmy.world 29 points 2 hours ago

Are they? Cause this is from 2018, so things might have changed.
