I wear a beanie in the winter, and this hat in the summer. Both are clearly designed for their purpose and that relieves me of any concern that I "don't know what I'm doing".

[–] danekrae@lemmy.world 36 points 1 week ago (4 children)

I would like a stetson in the summer to protect me from the sun, but I find myself thinking "attention seeking dufus" whenever I see a person wearing one here in Scandinavia.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 15 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Swede here, I have decided to get a hat like this during this summer:

https://hatstore.se/strahattar/swindle-straw-natural-natural-fedora-brixton

Combine it with a loose white linnen shirt and loose white linnen trousers and you can sort of claim to cosplay John Hammond from Jurassic Park.

What I have found is that you can't just get a hat and use it with any outfit, you need to have an outfit that works with the hat.

[–] danekrae@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (3 children)

I like that one, but I won't buy american products. Also a reason for not getting a stetson.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Fair point, I have yet to decide on the final model of hat I will actually get

[–] lime@feddit.nu 5 points 1 week ago (2 children)

there are many swedish hatmakers! cth ericson has something similar to that one.

[–] stoy@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago

Ah, perfekt! Jag kikar på hattmakare istället för hattbutiker!

[–] danekrae@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Tak skal du have!

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Get a Panama hat. They are similar in style and often made in Panama.

[–] deltatangothree@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Authentic Panama hats are actually from Ecuador! They just became popular when they sold them to people crossing the Canal, so when anybody asked the buyers said they got the hat in Panama.

This guy has a really outdated website with more information than anybody could possibly need about Panama hats lol

A man, a plan, a canal, Panama!

Just get one of those sun hats where things like 'stylish' were the very last thing the designers paid attention to, if they did at all. Either firm brim all around, or with the extra sun protecting floppy back, but somewhat excessive in the north: https://www.sundayafternoons.com/cdn/shop/files/adventure-hat-rivers-edge-front-SS26-DTC-2500px-Exclusive.jpg No one will think you're an attention seeker, although some might think you are a bit of a dufus; most people might think you've had skin cancer. But whatcha gonna do, function over form!

[–] danekrae@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

I can imagine myself wearing that and just ooze sexappeal.

My dad actually had skin cancer on the top of his head, which is why I'm being careful and sweat sunscreen. It's not a great look when walking out of a park...

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You can get that style hat in military camo and still look like a dufus.

I have a straw hat shaped kinda like a Stetson that I wear in the field for the same reason, but only there because I feel silly wearing it in public. I look like a cross between a fake cowpoke and Bob Belcher in his garden.

[–] danekrae@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

I look like a cross between a fake cowpoke and Bob Belcher in his garden.

So vivid.

[–] asdfasdfasdf@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I have one. It's great for the sun, and there are some of their hats that look great without coming off with Republican cowboy wannabe vibes.

I've seriously gotten so many compliments from random people on it. They also have some that are weather proof and can be rolled up for travel. All wool. Amazing.

Highly recommend.

I have an Indiana Jones hat that I got for Christmas a few years ago. It's literally branded "Indiana Jones," but if you didn't know that it honestly just looks like a cool felt hat. I guess it's technically a fedora, but not that kind of fedora. It rolls up and lays back out well again, too.

Anyway, I moved to New Zealand at the beginning of the year, and if you don't know, a hat to block the sun is like a survival requirement here. That's what I had, so that's what I started wearing. I think it looks pretty good. I haven't had anyone roll their eyes at me or anything, at least.

[–] WFloyd@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Abnormally large hat size means I know I look ridiculous.

[–] Wfh@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago

I have a massive head too (7 3/4 or 62cm). The only hats that fit me are either fitted 59Fifty baseball caps (but not buyin American anymore) or XXL Flexfit caps which A) only come in basic polyester/cotton/elastane blend and solid colors so tough shit if you want fun colorways and/or technical materials and B) are super affordable and supremely comfortable.

[–] peteypete420@sh.itjust.works 21 points 1 week ago

Thats me with jewelry. I see dudes rocking bracelets and rings and looking good, all the time. I put one on? I feel fucking ridiculous.

Adam Savage, of Mythbusters fame, and noted hat wearer, said in a Q&A once that even he feels weird when trying out a new hat. Like, he wears hats all the time, but a different hat than one he's used to feels awkward and "not like me". And you just have to grow into it, because if you get through that then it starts feeling right instead.

At least that's what he claims, I don't wear hats myself, besides a sunhat on a hike or paddle.

I think this is the video I'm referencing (sorry for the YouTube link) but I can't watch a video in my current situation, so I can't verify. If it's just some random video about hats, I'm sorry 😛

I get that entirely. I have a specific style of hat that I started wearing to not get bald guy sunburns (I’ve been told it’s an “I call movies ‘films’” hat.), people know that hat on me, it just works with my head shape. I’m not a hat person, I’m a that hat person. Trying on any other type of hat makes me feel absolutely fucking ridiculous.

[–] BurntWits@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 week ago (5 children)

The only time I don’t have a baseball cap on is when I’m home. Every day when I leave the house I put on a hat and down take it off until I’m home in the evening. Most people that aren’t close friends or family have never seen me without a hat before and I’ve had lots of people ask me what my hair even looks like. I think some people assume I’m balding or something but I just love having a hat on, I feel naked without it. It’s like a belt or watch, I need one on if I’m not home.

[–] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

As a bald guy I can tell you are just trying to hide it

[–] BurntWits@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It’s honestly the opposite issue actually. My hair is longer on top than the side, but it’s so thick it’s unwieldy. I have to get it thinned every time I go to the barber. I started wearing a hat because it was too difficult to style and now I’m so used to it I always need a hat on.

[–] Aussiemandeus@aussie.zone 3 points 1 week ago (3 children)

As a bald man fuck you.

But nah that's a pain, I used to have to get the back of my hair thinned but then well before going bald I shaved it so if I hated it I had time do try something.

But I like being bald I want to get Lazar hair removal on my head cause shaving is a pain in the arse.

Especially the back now that I have a kid i don't have time so if I don't stay on top of the daily shave it becomes such a chore to do properly but the top no longer realy grows so it's a mess

Yeah, I’m aware of how it sounds. Whenever I eventually start to go bald though I’m committing to it and going full cue ball head. I’m going to wait for either Halloween or April Fools, whichever is nearer, then shave off just the top for fun. Then commit a few days later.

[–] ParadoxSeahorse@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I feel naked

Sounds like what a balding man would say

[–] BurntWits@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

Yeah, that’s fair.

I tend to procrastinate getting haircuts. No reason, I just think I'll get one next week and next thing I know it's been 6 months. Those last few months I'll wear a hat to keep my hair out of my face. So if it wasn't for hats I'd probably get my hair cut way more often lol.

I didn't really get the feeling, cause I will sometimes wear a hat when it's super sunny, or I haven't shaved my head in a few days and feeling lazy. But when you mentioned a watch, I got it. I can't remember the last time I went out without one. It and some wood beads are the only jewelry I wear, and the beads are still kinda new so I sometimes forget and don't feel any sort of way about them. But I feel strange without a watch on, I've been wearing interesting looking mechanical watches since I can remember.

The only hats I've ever felt okay wearing are the floppy canvas bucket hats. I have nothing against beanies either, but the fuckers always crawl up my head over time.

All other hats feel like I'm wearing a shitty disguise.

[–] Zombie@feddit.uk 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

That's because beanies are sold as "one size fits all", when they clearly don't.

Couple that with companies trying to save material costs by making their "one size" hats as small as they think they can get away with and we end up with beanies that crawl up anyone with an average or above average head size.

You can get tailor made ones though, which if coupled with real wool instead of synthetic wool, should last a near lifetime.

I think I even saw one posted on one of the buy it for life communities a few months ago.

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Beanies are supposed to be worn with a gap between the top of your head and the fabric, it creates a pocket of warm air to keep your head warm in winter

[–] fakeman_pretendname@feddit.uk 15 points 1 week ago

You're thinking of Smurf Hats, Gnome Hats and Wizard Hats.

[–] ParadoxSeahorse@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago

Everyone looks stupid in a hat. And clothes. Get naked or gtfo

[–] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 11 points 1 week ago

There are many types of hats

There are even many types of baseball hats

You don't know which ones look good on you until you try them all.

Some of them may look dumb,

But that's a risk I'm willing to take.

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Better than people seeing my hair and knowing I also don't know what I am doing. It's permanently in that awkward phase when growing long hair, and refuses to get any longer.

[–] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 8 points 1 week ago

I got a job where a baseball cap was part of the uniform. Lost about three caps before I just started just putting it on at the start of my shift and never taking it off until it was time to leave.

Now I seldom leave the house without a head covering.

[–] MrEnitity@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 week ago

Some people can just wear anything. Flannel shirt, leather pants and Chuck Taylors? If you're a scruffy musician, no one bats an eye. If I, on the other hand, wear anything other than a baseball cap, everyone loses their minds.
