It's one banana Mamdani, what could it cost, $10?

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 25 points 2 weeks ago

Banana Mamdani sounds like a tropical drink. 🍹🍸

[–] RidgeDweller@sh.itjust.works 15 points 2 weeks ago

Nah, $7. It's 30% off!

[–] Blade9732@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

There's always money in the banana stand. Now, where's my attorney?

[–] Jiral@lemmy.world 108 points 2 weeks ago (13 children)

Do Americans not know how fruits work or is it just the Epstein class that doesn't?

[–] ParlimentOfDoom@piefed.zip 111 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (3 children)

It's the rich fucks who have never done their own shopping that didn't understand how shit works.

Like how the pedo in chief thinks you need an id to buy groceries (he's said this multiple times while trying to push for draconian voter id laws)

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 17 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It's entirely possible that they know what bananas look like unpeeled, and they know what the inside of a banana looks like on a plate, but they've never seen for themselves how bananas move from one phase to the other.

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Oh fuck I never considered that. That can't be true, bananas are everywhere in movies and shit right?

[–] Nouvellalia@lemmy.world 17 points 2 weeks ago

They are so far removed from a concrete reality that they've never seen a banana ripen. To the wealthy, all green bananas are bad and gross. The yellow bananas are good, and those are the ones people bring you when you pay them money for a banana, or the ones you see in your wealthy spaces.

For example, a wealthy person who has a fruit bowl on the counter will also have someone who changes the fruit out every day for fruit that is perfectly ripe that day. They may not even know fruit ages until they are well into adulthood and find out accidentally.

Yeah man, Americans only know hamburgers and corn. Everyone carries a gun and no one can read so fruit is a mystery. You definitely have the right idea about this place.

Stuff like this makes me feel good because it shows that we're not the only country where people are passively brainwashed by the media lol

Yes. We know. The idiot that said the thing probably knows too.

It’s a sound bite to make Mamdani seem like he’s pushing bad food. That’s it.

You can't really judge a country that large by its top 1% weirdest motherfuckers

[–] lemmy_get_my_coat@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Yeah but then can that 1% please shut the fuck up and fuck off?

If you eat a banana in Europe or the U.S., there’s a 99% chance it was harvested just as green as the one in the picture.

Today, bananas are harvested unripe in their countries of origin because they’re much easier to transport that way, and they’re then fumigated with ethylene in large ripening facilities at their destination to allow them to ripen further. This way, the logistics process is less stressful during transport, and the customer gets a perfectly ripe banana at the store... though I don’t understand why they used bananas for the photo that were taken out of the ripening house too early.

[–] protist@retrofed.com 27 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

In the US, bananas often hit the store shelves this color. They will ripen quickly over the following 3-4 days. You can decide to buy the ones that have ripened on the shelves or buy greener ones and let them ripen at home. Unripe bananas have several culinary uses, so it's good to have this option

[–] cenzorrll@piefed.ca 9 points 2 weeks ago

I much prefer to have a range of ripeness when buying bananas, otherwise you need to wait 4 days for them to ripen and now you have 24 hours to eat 8 bananas.

Not far from where we used to live in the UK there was a road sign directing you to the "Banana depot"

This be one of the places you speak of

Ironically, there's a phrase for someone who's so old and out of touch that they might as well be on death's doorstep:

"Don't buy green bananas."

(In the South it's often used in a self deprecating way: "let's just say I don't buy green bananas.")

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Ain’t no one got time for that shit.

I’m starting in on the first banana on the way home from the store. Gotta be quick with those fuckers. Otherwise it’s a day later and you’re like “welp, gotta make bread I guess.” Eyes tearing up. It’s like a funeral for those little bitches.

You’re tempted to switch these with a fresh one from the store if you have any kids in the house, like you did when the goldfish died. I can’t tell a kid the banana went to go live on a farm upstate.

[–] angband@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago

Dude, break off a couple yellows, grab some greens for later.

[–] RBWells@lemmy.world 38 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

I thought this was satire but looked up mr. macintosh and it's real. Dude, are you on death's door? No time to wait for the bananas to get ripe?

To be fair - If they are platanos - I wouldn't buy such green plantains because those fuckers are green, green, green for weeks then yellow but not ready and I forget about them and miss the one day they are ripe.

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 12 points 2 weeks ago

My first rule is if they're conservative, take it with a grain of salt.

If they're a white conservative, less of that.

If they're a old white conservative, of fuck off. No opinion of theirs is valid.

Tell me you're too rich to do your own grocery shopping/cooking without telling me.

[–] KindnessIsPunk@lemmy.ca 30 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

They say suspiciously green banana in the same way they say Barack Hussein Obama.

I really hope there is a limit to how much Fox New's daily message of "suspect and hate anything that looks like progress"

Hopefully the concrete benefits of cheaper groceries will sway people.

That shithead has never once been in a grocery store or had to buy his own food. Shows how out of touch he is. Fuck off with that shit.

Personally I get the green nanners since they'll last longer.

[–] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Smart people that aren't fucking idiots also get green ones. Especially in this economy

[–] thespcicifcocean@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

[–] mirshafie@europe.pub 29 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

For one banana? Can't be more than, what, like $10?

Its just because he's part of big apple has nothing to do with the politician or bananas. He's just trying to divert people from eating non apple fruits.

He never bothered to even watch the video clearly. I did and I remember Zohran clearly saying they were plaintains.

[–] Wilco@lemmy.zip 14 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The dude has servants that do his shopping. If they put green bannannas in front of him he would eat 2-3 and the puke because of the starch like a toddler that doesnt know better.

Don't trust the government - republicans that run the government. ????

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

That's the problem with that party. They believe the government doesn't work so they're trying to prove it.

[–] MrRandom@lemmy.zip 11 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

It's true, I don't want to eat green bananas, but I also don't want to eat brown bananas.

Bananas that green are the best possible buy for longevity. Then you grab one or two singles that are yellow to go with them.

Yall fruits don’t continue to ripen at home?

We look for the green bananas because we need them to not spoil to fast.

[–] WolvenSpectre@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I keep seeing "green banana" posts but I saw the video this is from and those are plantains

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Are they? The picture looks like bananas to me. Where I've lived in the states though plantains are usually less rounded and longer. They probably vary just the same and I'm not use to seeing it

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 9 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

I mean these are kinda excessively green. They really shouldn't be harvested this early but then again transporting them across the world to NYC requires a very early harvest to avoid spoilage.

Once you taste a banana that was harvested when it was ripe you'll never want another supermarket banana again.

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 14 points 2 weeks ago

Unfortunately I live almost 3000 miles away from where bananas grow so I'm not having a "harvested ripe" banana any time soon.
